Central Division
-The Blues signed forward Andy McDonald (right) to a four-year contract extension worth $18.8 million.
-St. Louis has had a pretty spotty history of goaltenders.
-Blackhawks forward Adam Burish has added some offense to his game.
-Guess what Red Wings forward was named on of the league's stars of the week? Fire Ray Shero.
-The Red WIngs could keep forwards Johan Franzen and Marian Hossa, but they'd have to get rid of some other important players.
-Forward Dan Cleary is doing all the dirty work for Detroit.
Northwest Division
-Matthew Lombardi had a goal and two assist for the Flames in a 6-2 rout of the Canadiens.
Rene Bourque and Mike Cammalleri each added a goal and an assist. The
win snapped a four-game losing streak for Calgary. Roman Hamrlik led
Montreal with two assists. The Habs have lost eight of their past 10
games.
-The Oilers demoted defenseman Theo Peckham to Springfield of the AHL.
-Avalanche defenseman Ruslan Salei had an interesting introduction to North American culture in Las Vegas.
-Wild coach Jacques Lemaire is a fan of new forward Dan Fritsche.
-The Wild have an interesting "attendant" for the visitors' penalty box at Xcel Energy Center.
Pacific Division
-Before they come to Pittsburgh, the Sharks have a rather big match-up with the Bruins tonight.
-With enforcer Jody Shelley dealing with a "lower-body" injury, the
Sharks recalled forward Jamie McGinn from Worcester of the AHL and demoted defenseman Derek Joslin.

-The Coyotes recalled forward Viktor Tikhonov from San Antonio of the AHL.
-Phoenix forward Martin Hanzal is dealing with a shoulder injury.
-Defenseman Keith Yandle (right) has become a reliable every day player for the Coyotes.
-The Ducks had a fashion show canceled. Johnny Upton unavailable for comment.
-Stars forward Sean Avery cleared waivers.
Adams Division
-A few days ago, we glibly posted this proclamation that we would
back any cause if you sent us something related to the Hartford
Whalers. It was meant as something of a joke but we are, if nothing,
passionate about the likes of Andrew Cassels and Adam Burt. A few folks have taken advantage of that love and have taken us up on our "offer."
The latest installment comes from EN reader Joy Frederick of Uniontown who asked us to promote her cause:
"Ok... Here is a picture of my husband's Hartford Whalers hockey card
collection. I don't know how many are here. If you are still plugging... here
is my request:
I am a fourth-grade teacher at R.W. Clark Elementary in
Uniontown, Pa. I would love to have a Penguin visit my classroom. I have asked
customer service, and was told that we 'are too far away from Pittsburgh.' I
told them that if I can drive my husband and two daughters to Pittsburgh for
sometimes two games a week, it couldn't be that far away. Any Penguin
interested can contact me at: justjoyapensfan@yahoo.com
-Joy Frederick
EN: Joy's offering:

-A better version of the photo can be viewed here.
The fact that someone actually dusted off a pretty impressive
collection of Hartford Whalers cards, lined them up and sent us a
picture of it is very humbling.
-As far as the Penguins travel limitations go, the Pirates have an event called the Winter Caravan
in the offseason that goes to various areas in the quad-state area such
as Uniontown and even destinations further than that like Erie, Cumberland,
Md. and Parkersburg, W.Va.
-We're certainly not saying the Penguins don't give back to their
fans. Nothing could be further from the truth. The fact that they
erected a giant television screen on the lawn of Mellon Arena on their
dime and allowed fans to watch for free during last season's playoffs
is evidence of that. But the idea of Uniontown being "too far" for a
trip is a little lame. That said, we can understand there being a schedule crunch given that the NHL season takes place during almost the same exact time period of the average academic calendar.
