Empty Netter Assists - Eastern Conference - 2-9-09

Penguins

-Dave Molinari's recap from yesterday. Remember Ty Conklin?

-On the right is a photo of Marc-Andre Fleury fishing out Pavel Datsyuk's second goal:

-The Associated Press' recap. Marian Hossa found a pretty effective way to shut up Penguins fans.

-Booth Newspapers' recap. Conklin said of the Hossa booing. "I guess I expected them to boo him a little bit, but that was vicious, at times. But it shows they care (about their team) and there's nothing wrong with that."

-The Detroit News' recap. Hossa has never been booed like that in his life.

-The Detroit Free Press' recap. Detroit played with urgency.

-Petr Sykora was hard on himself for taking a penalty yesterday.

-Conklin recorded his sixth shutout of the season.

-Detroit forward Dan Cleary had a huge defensive game yesterday.

-Despite the cold reception, Hossa praised Penguins fans saying, "These are great hockey fans, and they showed emotion."

-Today's "Marian Hossa is fitting in well with Detroit" piece is brought to you by Ron Cook of the Post-Gazette.

-Detroit coach Mike Babcock tried to make an official huff his magic marker yesterday. We think:

-Why was Alex Goligoski demoted?

-The Penguins' game in Washington Feb. 22 has been chosen selected by NBC for a national telecast. Thankfully, this is the last time NBC will force us to wake up before 2 p.m. in the regular season.

-John Curry made 32 saves and led the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins to a 5-0 shutout of the Norfolk Admirals. Jean-Michel Daoust scored two goals while Mark Letetsu added a goal and two assists.

-Alex Goligoski got some quality minutes for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton yesterday.

-Deryk Engelland and Alex Goligoski, together again.

Atlantic Division

-Jeff Carter (right) had two goals and an assist for the Flyers in a 3-2 win at Atlanta. Teammate Scott Hartnell added two assists for Philadelphia which has won 14 consecutive games against the Thrashers. Ilya Kovalchuk and Slava Kozlov each had a goal and an assist for Atlanta.

-The Flyers own the Thrashers.

-Devils forward Brendan Shanahan gets his first crack tonight at the team which refused to re-sign him this past offseason, the Rangers.

-Stars forward Sean Avery is expected to join the Rangers' AHL affiliate in Hartford.

Northeast Division

-The Sabres, one of the teams the Penguins are chasing for a playoff spot, will be without their top player for a few weeks. Forward Thomas Vanek will be out of the lineup 3-to-4 weeks due to a broken jaw.

-The Bruins don't regret trading forward Joe Thornton to San Jose three seasons ago.

-Former Senators goaltender Ray Emery left his KHL team. Emery apparently had this problem with not getting paid.

-Daniel Alfredsson (right) has seen it all in Ottawa.

Southeast Division

-The Capitals demoted forward Alexandre Giroux and goaltender Michal Neuvirth to Hershey of the AHL.

-Thrashers forward Ilya Kovalchuk had a productive weekend. He picked up a goal, an assist and a son.

-The Panthers lead the league in goals by defensemen.

-Former Penguins forward Rick Tocchet has managed to give the Lightning a sense of direction since taking over as coach.

-Tampa Bay's Mike McKenna is not your typical NHL goaltender. Or person.
