Empty Netter Assists - Eastern Conference - 1-16-09

Penguins

-How big of a difference will Sergei Gonchar's return make?

-PensBurgh examines Alex Ovechkin's alleged dirty hit on Sidney Crosby.

-"Ovechkin shouldn't behave that way the next time."

-Uhh... Jersey foul (right).

-Capitals owner Ted Leonsis reads The Pensblog. He has a WWGRD bracelet. We think.

-Wheeling Nailers forwards Aaron Clarke, Bryan Ewing and defenseman Elgin Reid were added to the ECHL All-Star Game.

Atlantic Division

-The Islanders agreed to terms with former goaltender Wade Dubielewicz.

-The Penguins might still end up in Kansas City... to play the Islanders?

-Whenever he plays his first game with the Devils, forward Brendan Shanahan will set a record for longest gap of time between games with one franchise.

-Flyers captain Mike Richards was embarrassed by losing to the Lightning last night. Or his team's lack of drowned puppies. One or the other.

Northwest Division

-Tim Thomas made 40 saves for the Bruins in a 2-1 road win against the Islanders. New York has lost six consecutive games.

-Andrei Markov had a goal and an assist for the Canadiens who edged the Predators, 3-2.

-It might be a little early to do some scoreboard watching, but here's a win which helps the Penguins. Jason Blake had three goals and two assists for the Maple Leafs in a 6-4 win at Carolina. Jiri Tlusty added three assists for Toronto while teammate Tomas Kaberle had a goal and an assist. Matt Cullen, Eric Staal and Scott Walker each had a goal and an assist for the Hurricanes who stayed only one point ahead of the Penguins in the Eastern Conference standings.

-Here's a game which didn't help the Penguins. Shootout goals by Derek Roy and Jason Pominville gave the Sabres a 5-4 comeback win at Dallas. Buffalo came back from a 3-0 deficit to earn the win. Paul Gaustad had two goals for the Sabres in regulation while teammate Drew Stafford added two assists. Steve Ott led the Stars with a goal and an assist.

-With former Penguins forward Alex Kovalev feeling sick, the Canadiens recalled Gregory Stewart from Hamilton of the AHL.

-The Senators demoted goaltender Martin Gerber to Binghamton of the AHL for conditioning purposes.

-How bad are things for the Senators? Bank robbers are wearing Ottawa gear.

-Maple Leafs forward Nik Antropov (right) is getting restless with the Maple Leafs' rebuilding.

Southeast Division

-Former Penguins forward Mark Recchi recorded two assists and helped the Lightning beat the Flyers, 4-1. Recchi tied Dale Hawerchuk for 17th place on the NHL's career scoring list with 1,409 points. Fire Ray Shero. Mike Smith made 31 saves in the win.

-The Lightning recalled forward Steve Downie from Norfolk of the AHL and demoted defenseman Vladimir Mihalik.

-Carolina owner Peter Karmanos tore into former coach Peter Laviolette.

-Former Penguins forward Colby Armstrong had a role in the Thrashers naming Ilya Kovalchuk captain.

-Panthers forward Ville Peltonen is one tough dude. He's going to play with a broken foot.

-Could goaltender Jose Theodore be the difference for the Capitals when the playoffs roll around?

Also, Ryan Malone *and* Adam Hall had assists. Fire Ray Shero twice!
