Empty Netter Assists - Eastern Conference - 1-14-09

Penguins

-Dave Molinari's recap from last night's game. Michel Therrien felt the win was good for his team's confidence.

-The Associated Press' recap. The Flyers had an eight-game winning streak at home snapped.

-The Philadelphia Inquirer's recap. John Stevens didn't think his team matched the Penguins' desperation.

-The Philadelphia Daily News' recap. The Flyers were sloppy.

-Does Chris Minard (above, center with Miroslav Satan and Jordan Staal) deserve a shot on the top line?

-Adam Gretz of AOL says a coaching change will not fix the Penguins. Assuming they're still broken.

-Sidney Crosby will take part in the NHL's breakaway challenge at the All-Star Lame Game skills competition. He will compete with Montreal's Alex Kovalev, Washington's Alex Ovechkin, Chicago's Patrick Kane and Anaheim's Ryan Getzlaf.

-Random YouTube Find of the Day: Markus Naslund, formerly of the Penguins, scoring an amazing goal against the Mighty Ducks in the 1995-96 season:

-Random Jersey submission of the Day: The photo is fuzzy but EN reader Rob Luther was at the Penguins-Lightning game Dec. 23 and spotted a Philippe DeRouville jersey:

-The Wheeling Nailers signed former Hurricanes forward Shane Willis as a player/assistant coach. Willis had a 20-goal campaign with Carolina in 2000-01 but he might be best remembered for being on the business end of a check from Devils defenseman Scott Stevens in the playoffs later that season:

-Nailers coach Greg Puhalski will coach the American Conference in the ECHL All-Star Game.

Atlantic Division

-Henrik Lundqvist made 33 saves for the visiting Rangers who edged the rival Islanders, 2-1. As if life wasn't miserable enough for the Islanders, backup goaltender Joey MacDonald left the game in the first period due to a groin injury. He was replaced by Yann Danis who made 24 saves in the loss.

-Travis Zajac and Dainius Zubrus each had a goal and an assist for the Devils in a 5-3 win at Vancouver. Teammates Patrik Elias and Jamie Langenbrunner each added two assists. Ryan Kesler led the Canucks with two assists.

-With Rick DiPietro's wonky knee still an issue, the Islanders are talking to the agent of former goaltender Wade Dubielewicz who recently had his KHL contract bought out.

-The Islanders dealt defenseman Brett Skinner to the Thrashers for forward Junior Lessard.

-Islanders forward Mike Sillinger is the Kevin Bacon of hockey.

Northeast Division

-Two goals from Zdeno Chara lifted the Bruins to a 3-1 win against the rival Canadiens. David Krejci added a goal and an assist for Boston while Tim Thomas made 34 saves in the win.

-Check out what Thomas did to Montreal's Andrei Kostitsyn:

-Dany Heatley and Antoine Vermette each had a goal and an assist for the Senators in a 5-1 thumping of the Hurricanes. The win ended a five-game losing streak for Ottawa. Former Penguins forward Jarkko Ruutu played his first game since serving a two-game suspension for biting Buffalo Andrew Peters.

-The Maple Leafs recalled forward Jiri Tlusty from its of the AHL affiliate.

-From the "Karma's a $%##!" department, Boston forward Marco Sturm will miss the rest of the season after undergoing knee surgery. Sturm was the player who kicked out the feet of Penguins defenseman Mark Eaton last season ending his 2007-08 campaign with a knee injury.

-The Bruins recalled defenseman Matt Lashoff from Providence of the AHL and demoted goaltender Tuukka Rask.

-The injury bug is starting to hit the Bruins.

Southeast Division

-Today's "Alex Ovechkin should've been voted into the All-Star Lame Game" piece is brought to you by Mike Wise of the Washington Post.

-The Thrashers recalled rookie defenseman Zach Bogosian from a rehab assignment from Chicago of the AHL. Bogosian was the club's first-round pick last year.

-The Lightning put defenseman Matt Smaby on injured reserve due to a "lower-body" injury and recalled defenseman Kevin Quick from Norfolk of the AHL.

-Tampa Bay general manager Brian Lawton claims he has not had any conversation with the Canadiens about a trade involving forward Vincent Lecavalier.

-Panthers forward Ville Peltonen is dealing with a broken foot.

Hey Seth..About Minard..I think that if given a chance, he could be a goal scorer for the big team.  While burning up the A doesn't guarantee the same in the NHL, given a good spot and a few games to get comfortable, I think it would work.  Pesonen is on fire also, just gets the call up to play a few minutes a game. Oh, and by the way, wasn't Vengance Philly's battle cry last year?  Guess we got it last night!
