We generally don't pay much attention to the Penguins' line combination. Scratch that, we outright don't acknowledge them. It's like noting there was oxygen in the breath of air you just took. They rarely last the duration of an entire game.
But given the team's recent state, it's certainly significant news today. Michel Therrien shuffled his combinations quite a bit by the sounds of things.
Perhaps the most notable news is Miroslav Satan's (right) demotion to the fourth line. He was brought to Pittsburgh to be a 25- to 30-goal threat on the first or second lines. Satan skated with Eric Godard and Dustin Jeffrey in practice today. If Godard plays, it will be his first appearance since a 1-0 win in New Jersey, Dec. 26 when he was injured blocking a shot.
Therrien will also bench defensemen Hal Gill and Alex Goligoski in favor of Philippe Boucher and Mark Eaton tonight. Tim Wallace also appears to be a scratch.
The Rangers will also make one move of their own and will dress forward Aaron Voros in place of Lauri Korpikoski.
EN Says: Frankly, we're surprised Satan hasn't been benched. Either way, something needed to be done in order to spark his game. He's always been streaky throught out his NHL career, but recent slide (no goals in his last six games) has been a significant part of the Penguins' recent troubles.
Gill has been disappointing since his return from an injury Dec. 30. He just hasn't been all that aggressive in front of the net.
