Picture this - 12-28-08

We have a few pictures of our own and from other readers that we've been meaning to post. Today presents an opportunity to do so:

-First we get our stuff out of the way. We took a picture of this definite jersey foul last night which somehow snuck through the cracks during our live blog last night:

-We know Mellon Arena will only be around for another season and a half, but this is definitely a parking signage foul if such a thing exists:

-EN reader Brandon Cochenour spotted a Jay Caufield jersey:

-EN reader Michael Zumbo of Long Beach Island, N.J. sent us a picture of this jersey he owns and a question:

"I've realized that you have somewhat of an obsession for hockey jerseys, and I think I have one you might find pretty interesting.  I bought it around 2000 at a Starter outlet in New York.  I know the team has never used this jersey, unless they  used it as a practice jersey which I doubt. Tell me what you think about this possible jersey foul."

-Michael Zumbo

EN Says: We don't know what to make out of this jersey. We've seen versions of it for several years and it's always been a big question mark to us. It's something made by Starter which used to make official jerseys for the NHL.

Before make a ruling one way or another, we need to round up some more information. Does anyone know the backstory on this jersey?

-EN reader Doug Keklak spotted a scan of this old school print ad for USA's NHL coverage over at Uniwatch:

-The Devils Christmas colors make us feel like we're in sixth grade again.

The blue Starter "pigeon" sweater is, I believe, a "fashion" style that Starter produced for a number of teams.  I remember seeing black Red Wing, Rangers and other teams back then (this was before the original third jerseys were introduced in 95 - 96).  Just another way to sell what was at the time a $75 sweater.

Just came back from Christmas Holidays and I read your post about the Habs - Pens game..

Well I just want to point out that

"Sucrerie de coton ici" is not really French for "Cotton Candy Here!!!!".

Well, it is the translation in fact but this kind of candy is called another way : "Barbe à Papa" -> "Dad's Bearb"

Ok, maybe Cotton Candy is a better name :p :p

TN, Thanks for the heads up. I need to confer with the EN grand council to make a final ruling on it.

Corse66, You mean Babelfish lied to me? I'm never trusting Google again!

I had a reader from Australia tell me Cotton Candy there is called Fairy Floss.

I think we have the best name here in the U.S.

I saw a definite jersey foul tonight at the Hershey Bears game -- one of those split sweaters -- Ray Bourque -- half Bruins, half Avalanche...

I tried and tried to get a picture, but just couldn't get one -- really quite unforunate....

Yes Seth, I agree with you, I think that US rules on this point!

(and on the one of jerseys design.. remember the pink jersey of Paris Rugby Club... )

Ali, I appreciate the effort, but I think for the greater good of all of our retinas, it's best you didn't get that picture. ;)

Corse66, I'd prefer to not remember those rugby jerseys thank you. ;)

Cotton Candy is Candy Floss here in the UK. Definite Jersey foul WRT to the Malkin Jersey, but not as bad as the 'MAKLIN' jersey that the Pensblog spotted. f3.yahoofs.com/.../ept_sports_nhl_experts-318666867-1211382064.jpg

Sorry that the Stade Francais jerseys have lingered in the memory, it was my fault, but it gets worse, they painted their goalposts pink...

I remember those fashion color jerseys Starter cooked up. I guess hockey jerseys weren't the big seller they thoight they might be. I got about ten jerseys at Gabriel Bros one year all for less than 20 bucks each.
