Empty Netter Assists - Eastern Conference - 12-22-08

Penguins

-Sidney Crosby set a record for All-Star Lame Game voting. As Greg Wyshynski of Yahoo! has been preaching, this is much ado about nothing.

-Get ready for the Eat 'N Park West Entrance at The Coal Mine.

-So... Sidney Crosby or Evgeni Malkin?

-Don Cherry was at his best (or worst depending on your point of view) during Saturday's Penguins-Maple Leafs game:

-Cherry refers to Ruslan Fedotenko as "the Russian." Fedotenko is actually Ukranian. But we guess when you dislike anyone not from Mississauga, you're not particular with nationalities.

-She's no Jeff Jimerson (Who is really?) but here's Sarah Marince singing the national athems prior to Saturday's game:

-Speaking of Jimerson, EN reader Rob McIlvried seems to think his son's Fisher Price Little People toy "Eddie" looks like the famed anthem singer/dominator:

-Other than the butt-cut leaning to the opposite side of Jimerson's, the image might as well be a mirror.

-Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins forward Paul Bissonnette got into a fight with Albany's Trevor Gilles Saturday. Gilles ended up injuring his head after falling to the ice:

-Bissonnette appears to say "Is he OK?" at the 1:19 mark.

-Aaron Clarke, Erik Johnson and Rob Sirianni each had a goal and an assist for the Wheeling Nailers in a 6-2 defeat of the Trenton Devils. Mitch Ganzak and Matt Grennier each recorded two assists for Wheeling while David Brown made 37 saves in the win.

-The Nailers have created quite a bit of history.

Atlantic Division

-Shootout goals by Jamie Langenbrunner and Travis Zajac gave the Devils a 3-2 win against the Flyers. Scott Clemmensen made 27 saves in the win. Philadelphia was led by Jeff Carter and Joffrey Lupul who each had a goal and an assist.

-He might not be chatty, but Jeff Carter is one of the league's best goal-scorers and puppy-drowners.

-Devils forward John Madden (illness) and defenseman Bryce Salvador ("lower body") are dinged up.

-Islanders defenseman Andy Sutton (right) is dealing with a broken foot.

-Injuries have ravaged the Islanders.

Northeast Division

-Blake Wheeler scored two goals for the Bruins in a 6-3 win at St. Louis. David Krejci recorded three assists for Boston while teammates Zdeno Chara and Phil Kessel each had two. Kessel an 18-game point-scoring streak. Bruins forward Michael Ryder added a goal and an assist.

-Check out Wheeler's second goal:

-Boston defenseman Dennis Wideman returned to St. Louis for the first time since being traded to Boston in March 2007.

-Bruins forward Patrice Bergeron was released from a hospital and was officially diagnosed with a concussion.

-With goaltender Vesa Toskala dealing with a sore groin, the Maple Leafs recalled goaltender Justin Pogge (right) from their AHL affiliate.

Southeast Division

-Tuomo Ruutu's overtime goal gave the Hurricanes a 3-2 win at Montreal. Eric Staal led Carolina with a goal and two assists while Ruutu and Sergei Samsonov each had a goal and an assist. Alex Tanguay led Montreal with two assists.

-Tomas Vokoun made 23 saves and recorded his 27th career shutout as the Panthers beat the Avalanche, 3-0.

-Panthers defenseman Jassen Cullimore is dealing with a hand injury.

-Lightning coach and former Penguins forward Rick Tocchet backed up forward Martin St. Louis' harsh comments about some of Tampa Bay's players.

-Tocchet went all Herb Brooks on his team yesterday at Mellon Arena.

-With goaltender Olaf Kolzig dealing with an "upper-body" injury, Tampa Bay recalled goaltender Karri Ramo from Norfolk of the AHL.

-Somehow, despite distance and mediocrity, the Thrashers and Maple Leafs have developed a pretty nasty rivalry.

Freaking Don Cherry.

I'm sure the Pens felt greeeeaaaaat after that game.

In other news...the Fisher Price/Jeff Jimmerson look-a-like might be right up there with the likes of Abe Vigoda/Alex Goligoski.

I've been wondering this since the game on Sat and since you mentioned the great Jeff Jimmerson in this post.  I was wondering what the Pens home record is when Jeff sings the National Anthem?  Maybe Jeff inspires the players more when he's out there...

a Habay, I want to say someone at LetsGoPens.com keeps a record for Jimerson, Marince and others. I'll have to dig it up.

Ryan Malone has to be looking around the locker room and saying to himself "I left a contender for THIS!"  Tocchet could make that team skate until they die and they won't get better.
