How does this work? - 10-15-08

Following the game last night, we decide to eat healthy and hit up Primanti's in the South Side. We walked in to this sight:

A Flyers fan with three Penguins fans.

Huh?

How does that work?

A few more things we saw in our journeys last night:

-We were able to get a much clearer shot of the five new banners:

-Brian Engblom's new hairdo:

Now on any other mammal, that's a good head of hair. But it just looks very odd on Enblom. We admit we've complained about his mullet quite a bit in the past. But seeing what he looks like with a more conservative hairstyle, we now feel he needs to bring the mullet back.

-There have been these "Let's Go Pens!" stencils on the sidewalk near Gate 3 since last season:

They're not accompanied with the team's new marketing slogan:

EMPTY NETTER ASSISTS

Penguins

-Dave Molinari's recap from last night.

-Mike Lange's goal calls from last night:

-If you didn't see Eric Godard and Riley Cote beating the daylights out of each other last night, here you go:

-Postgame video.

-We wouldn't pre-order that Brendan Shanahan Penguins jersey anytime soon.

-The Penguins reacted to the death of Rangers prospect Alexei Cherepanov.

-Former Penguins forward Jaromir Jagr really took the death of Cherepanov hard.

-The Penguins' plans for a hotel next to the new arena are going well.

-Random YouTube find of the day: Marc-Andre Fleury being a bad dude. During his days as a Cape Breton Screaming Eagle, Fleury was pretty quick to drop the gloves apparently. His fights on this video can be found at the 0:27 and 3:32 marks

What was up with the guy going all Tim Harris six-shooter at the 2:03  mark?

-Wilkes-Barre/Scranton goaltender John Curry (ankle) and defenseman Joey Mormina (groin) are dealing with injuries.

Atlantic Division

-An investigator ruled Cherepanov had a chronic heart condition called ischemia.

-The Islanders demoted forward Blake Comeau (right) to Bridgeport of the AHL. Defenseman Radek Martinek is dealing with an upper-body injury.

-Flyers defenseman Derian Hatcher is rehabbing his injured knee.

-New Philadelphia defenseman Andrew Alberts has been teamed with Steve Eminger.

-Devils forward Bobby Holik wasn't crazy about his time as the Thrashers' captain.

Northeast Division

-Sabres forward Jochen Hecht is dealing with a finger injury.

-The Bruins recalled forward Vladimir Sobotka from Providence of the AHL.

Southeast Division

-Check out the two videos the Capitals played prior to their home-opener:

Quality stuff.

-The Lightning is pretty much just picking up defensemen off the street. The Bolts signed former Rangers defenseman Marek Malik to a one-year deal worth $1.2 million. Somewhere, former Penguins blueliner Richard Lintner is keeping his phone clear.

-Tampa Bay forward Steven Stamkos (right), the first overall pick in this year's draft, has been quiet so far.

-Lightning defenseman and former Penguins prospect Jamie Heward is happy to be back in the NHL.

-Tampa Bay defenseman Paul Ranger, has been cleared to resume play. He has been dealing with a shoulder injury.

-Former Penguins defenseman Noah Welch played in his first game in nearly a year with the Panthers.

-Panthers defenseman Karlis Skrastins is back in practice after dealing with a back and neck injury.

-The Hurricanes' new jerseys are popular.

-Carolina's power play is having trouble.

Central Division

-The Red Wings met President Bush yesterday:

-Even if they weren't part of the Red Wings' championship, former Penguins Ty Conklin and Marian Hossa took in the sights in Washington.

-Joe Elliot of Def Leppard said it was the NHL's fault he stuck the Stanley Cup upside down.

-Blue Jackets forward Mike Peca is appealing his suspension for abuse of an official.

Northwest Division

-Todd Bertuzzi's (above, center) two goals helped the Flames edge the Avalanche, 5-4.

-The Avalanche's special teams have been lackluster.

-Antti Miettinen had two goals and one assist for the Wild in a 4-2 win at Atlanta.

-Wild forwards Pierre-Marc Bouchard (back) and Owen Nolan (lower body) are dealing with injuries. Forward Cal Clutterbuck was recalled from Houston of the AHL.

Pacific Division

-Jarret Stoll and Tom Preissing each had a goal and an assist for the Kings in a 6-3 defeat of the rival Ducks.

-The Sharks got two goals from Patrick Marleau and beat the Blue Jackets, 5-2.

-Stars rookie forward Fabian Brunnstrom is set to make his NHL debut tomorrow.

-The Sharks and the Coyotes had blackouts on their television schedules lifted.

Adams Division

-Is the NHL copying the NFL?

-If so, it's not as if the NFL has always been original.

Early on in Ray Shero's tenure with the Pens when they were sucking great wind with reagards to face-off wins ( and game wins, for that matter), the league premier face-off specialist Yanic Perreault became a free agent.  Shero passed on signing Perreault  and the Pens suffered for it.

The question is why did he pass?  Was Perreault too old?  Did he make too much money in Shero's eyes for his role?

While we do know that Shero had experience with Yanic Perreault when he was asst GM at Nashville, we may never know the real reason he failed to sign a proven face-off specialist and 20 goal - 30 pt/season guy.

Today Perreault continues to lead the NHL with face-off win percentage at >60% (last year he lead with 64.33%!!)

Enter Mike Zigomanis.  Has Shero finally found the face-off specialist they Pens so desperately needed?

Looks like it.

And Shero got him on the cheap at $650,000/yr.

My fraternity house was about 3-2 Pens vs. Flyers fans.  Philly guys are much more tolerable when out-numbered.  They were really obnoxious in '89, but got a lot better by '91.  Funny enough, these same guys keep suggesting that I grow my mullet back.

L67  -  Who needs Yanic Perreault when you have Domenic Moore?

I'm shaking my head at Joe Elliott (Def Leopard) blaming the league for telling him the cup goes small side down. If he looked at the engravings on the cup, you would think he'd get a clue, unless he's accustomed to reading things written upside down.
