Donnie Iris wouldn't have done this - 10-10-08

So the NHL kicked off the North American portion of its season last night with a game between the Maple Leafs and Red Wings in Detroit. For any hockey fan, opening night is always a bright moment. A new season full of possibilities. It's a festive time.

It was so festive to someone from the NHL, they decided to dust off a lame 1980s hair band in order to commemorate the start of the 2008-09 season. The NFL gets bands like U2 or the Rolling Stones, some of the biggest bands in the world. The NHL gets Def Leppard which apparently didn't have any birthday parties scheduled for last night.

Def Leppard held some sort of concert in conjunction with the Maple Leafs-Red Wings game. Kyle Quincey and Darren McCarty, both members of the Red Wings last season, came out with the Stanley Cup. Then they handed it to Joe Elliot, the lead singer of Def Leppard...

He put the Cup upside down...

...

He put the STANLEY %$#@$! CUP UPSIDE DOWN!!!!!

Know how we complain about people who have never won the Cup should never touch it. This is why.

Even if this idiot didn't know what the Cup was, you would think just plain common sense would prevail. It's a cup! You don't put cups upside down!

We suggest at the next general managers meetings, the powers that be only approve bands which have been relevant since 1995 for Cup celebrations. Someone rush The Smashing Pumpkins into training.

How about a new rule.  Only Canadian bands should be allowed to perform for hockey games.  The Canadian band Finger Eleven was in town a year or two ago and they were playing at a bar, I forget which.  There was a particularly great game taking place between the Pens and Maple Leafs and only about half of the bar was really paying attention to the band.  And yet, the band completely acknowledged that, given the choice, they would all probably rather be watching the hockey game too.  Now there's a band that would have respect for the cup.

Do you think Rush is too high-profile for the NHL?  Now theres something I'd watch.

The marketing geniuses that gave us "Autumn in Sweden" proudly present aging rockers DEF LEPPARD!!  Were the Monkees unavailable?  How about Triumph, at least they're Canadian.

Paul Bissonette is a survivor? Not compared to Clint Malarchuck.  He's a real life version of Mr. Bill.

Nice to see Dave Brown coming back to Wheeling.  I'll be covering the preseason game tonight there vs. the Chiefs, so it should be an interesting time.

I could not believe what I saw from the team that San Jose sent out in their season opener last night!  It's early to predict, but... if I had to make a guess today, who would come out of the West to play in the Cup Final, I'd say the Sharks.  McLellan has done a great job thus far.  How far will they go?  Only time will tell.

Who's going to be at the Igloo tomorrow night for the home season opener?

Not sure what makes me want to puke more - the Hossa SI cover or Def 'friggin' Leppard descerating the Cup!

**Stupid Gary Bettman**

I am with you, Seth, all future "bands" MUST be Canadian...better yet... from this point forward NO BAND EVER TOUCHES THE CUP!

It's only October 10th and I am already sick of hearing about the Paul Bissonette human interest story.   He is still a 1/2 of a gnat's eyelash away from Wheeling - with all due respect to the Nailers. Please ask the PG wrtiers to write about something else.  I hear Max Talbot is good for a quote or two. or better yet I hear that the Staals are brothers... that Hall Gill is tall ... that Geno now speaky Ang-lish...whatev

After he figured out he put the cup upside down that waste of breathable air Joe Elliot said, "We're soccer boys, what do we know?" Why would you say that? You're just shooting yourself in the foot even more by making an inane statement like that in front of THOUSANDS of hockey fans.. And what does that even mean anyway? Does the sport of soccer and all those who associate with the game live in a world without cups?

Bettman should have wrapped all of his marketing ineptitude into one neat package and presented Mama Mia on Ice.

I was at the Wings game last night.  They announced the new team members individually before the anthems.  Hossa got a huge repsonse.  But it was nice to see the WIngs lose, the WIndsor kids were loud and proud.  No fluke either, Leafs played a real lunch pail game and took it to them.  Hanging banners for individual awards is lame, though.  Earn your banners as a team.  That's what everyone else does.  If your rafters look bare, then step up your game.

Hossa had the primary assist on Detroit's second goal.

Still, Fire Ken Holland!
