Wilkes-Barre/Scranton hoping to avoid confusion, creativity

You are looking at a photo of Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins player Paul Bissonette showing off his team's new third jersey yesterday.

Basically it looks like all they did was take an old NHL Penguins jersey from the Dave Schultz era and slap "PENGUINS" across the front just in case you forget what team your watching. Kind of like what the Stars did with their home Reebok Edge-Super-Duper-Mega-Ultra-Awesome-Humungo-Women-Will-Want-You Uniform System jerseys.

While we do like the way it looks, the lack of effort in coming up with this is kind of disappointing.

That said, at least Wilkes-Barre/Scranton fans won't get confused and think they're watching the Quebec Nordiques.

What do you think? Let us know in the comments.

Those jerseys are awful.  Twice as sad, since they have a very cool regular jersey, even if the WBS Penguin is on steroids.

The only thing that could make those uniforms worse is if they used the EN logo. Seth, when can you make it go away?

I like the 70's era look of the sleeves and trim, but the crest is horrible.  I think they are trying to copy Vancouver's jersey, but instead of using a logo they used a number.  And speaking of that, what is up with adding the numbers to the front of hockey jerseys?  Just because Buffalo did it on the banana slug jerseys doesn't mean it is a good idea.  They need to rework this one.

They look like a bad high school jersey.  I rather purchase and wear an Iowa Chops jersey!  Puke.

I don't find the jersey nearly as offensive as Bissonette's shorts. I kinda dig it. It's different, but I kinda like the wordmark/number on the front idea.

Also, considering it's the big alternate jersey reveal, wouldn't you think some member of the Pens' staff would've bothered to bring their digital camera so they wouldn't have to put a photo taken with a cell phone cam on the website? Just sayin'.

Those wouldn't even be good college intramural jerseys!!!  The Reebok dumb-it-down look has even hit the AHL!!!

Hey, this is, after all, one of those Reebok "women will love you" jerseys.  (Alas, the Reebok Edge system came into the AHL last season as well.)

It's not SO bad... although judging on Bissonnette's expression, he doesn't look too enthusiastic about the whole thing.

I'm fine with the colors and striping. Like many of the other commenters, I dislike the word Penguins and the number in lieu of a logo. As Seth pointed out, this is a knockoff of the Reebok Edge version of the Dallas Stars home jersey. I have heard the story of why the Stars had to give up their old style of jersey (Reebok's Edge fabrics could not deal with color/pattern sublimation the way the old jerseys were, with the start built into the enitre body of the jersey. Technical difficulties notwithstanding, the Stars jersey showed no imagination whatsoever. The WBS jerseys have no such technical issues, so why no logo? Someone mentioned Vancouver's new jersey - that's awful, too. The only jersey with a word on it that makes sense is the Rangers since there is no physical ranger (like a cowboy Texas Ranger) logo to use. Also, it's been in use for over 70 years. Anyway, can you tell I don't like the new logo?

Something tells me that the front office has stopped trying with these jerseys.  This team is so popular around here that no matter what jersey design they trot out (alternate, Christmas, St. Patrick's Day, the now-annual camouflage uniform, whatever), there are people that will buy them.

My original guess for the alternate jersey was wrong, by the way.  Since this is the tenth anniversary season for the team, I was certain that they'd do something with an X on it, like they did during the fifth anniversary season with the "V" on the alternate.

Then again, I've never been much of an "OMG MUST COLLECT ALL JERSEYS" guy anyway.  I care more for the quality of the players wearing the jerseys than for the look of the jerseys.
