Bernie Kosar becomes a "real" NHL owner

Remember Bernie Kosar? He was the Cleveland Browns quarterback who ran like he had two left feet? Casey Hampton would've laughed at his running ability.

Well Kosar wasn't all that successful at avoiding pass rushers and he doesn't seem to all that swift in avoiding the IRS either. The "Man" is coming down on Kosar, a limited partner with the Florida Panthers, for not paying taxes the past two years.

From the Miami Herald:

"Kosar, who played for the Browns, Cowboys and Dolphins, went through a contentious split from wife Babette that became final in December. He says some of the tax notices went to his old address. "When you go through a divorce and you have to switch all the names and all of the paper and all of the accounts, this stuff happens.''"

We're sure the "I got kicked out of the house by my wife" defense will fly well with the compassionate souls at the IRS.

While there's not word yet if Predators investor William "Boots" Del Biaggio will seek Kosar's advice in how to throw side armed or how to use Turbo Tax, we can't help but wonder why anyone who invests his cash into a NHL team manages to run into money troubles. Del Biaggio, Howard Baldwin, John Spanos, John Rigas, etc.

This will probably do little to derail the Panthers' continued quest for mediocrity in 2008-09, but it convinces us even more that we would walk into Gary Bettman's office dressed like Scrooge McDuck, Ted DiBiase or the Monopoly guy, light a cigar with a dollar bill, pull out a hefty bag of cash and "make it rain" like Adam "Pacman" Jones and trick convince Bettman into selling us a franchise.

And witnesses say he did not get right up in the catcher's face and wave his arms before he threw it.

I believe most Pirates players take that approach when they bat.

Here is the rough translation of the Stephen Dixon article ... if anyone cares...

Stephen Dixon ready for Brynäs!

It is now clear with a center to laget.Stephen Dixon from Canada will join the Brynäs A team as soon as possible

The search for a center to Brynäs A team is now over for sportchef Ricky Sundlöv who found what they want in the centre Stephen Dixon. Stephen Dixon (181/85) is 23 years old and comes from Canada. He was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and in recent seasons played in the AHL. Stephen Dixon has contracted for one year.

-- We have searched for a tvåvägscenter, which is not so easy to find in the AHL where it is more common that it is envägscenter, "says Ricky Sundlöv. Stephen Dixon is a strong tvåvägscenter, and a young guy that is still developing. He fits very well into our lagbygge for this season, and was the last piece in the puzzle we needed for the team.

The last season played Dixon in Portland Pirates who took the all the way to the semi-finals in which they after 7 matches were excluded from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. In 98 games (80 in grundserien and 18 of the Finals) made Stephen Dixon 55 points (23/32). Dixon has previously represented Canada J20 World Cup team, where he was with the 03/04 season and took the World Cup silver and the season 04/05 World Cup gold.

-- Stephen Dixon is a player who has been prominent in his age group in Canada, and a great talent, "said Niklas Czarnecki, coaches in Brynäs. He is a loyal and responsible guy and he plays well both offensively and defensively. He is a skilful passningsspelare in the offensive zone and he takes a great responsibility in the defensive game. He is a good guy, both on and off the ice and he fits well into our lagbygge, both in age and in ambition.

Stephen Dixon will connect to Brynäs troops as soon as all the papers for the transition is completed. He will, however, the earliest to arrive in Brisbane on 5-6 days.
