Why you'll watch - February

Here's an in depth look at the Penguins' February schedule:

Feb 3 - At Canadiens: Because you still hang on to your Alex Kovalev jersey wishing he'd come back to Pittsburgh (He is a free agent after next season by the way.)

Feb. 4 - Lightning: Because you never bought a Michel Ouellet jersey and you're not wishing he'd come back to Pittsburgh (He is a free agent after next season by the way.)

Feb. 6 - Blue Jackets: Because new Columbus forward R.J. Umberger is from some town in Western Pennsylvania. We think. And he usually tears up the Penguins.

Feb. 8 - Red Wings: Because there are way too many reasons to even list. This might be the most important one though:

Feb. 11 - Sharks: Because Evgeni Nabokov might be the best goaltender in the league.

Feb. 14 - At Maple Leafs: Because 1967 will last one more year.

Feb. 16 - At Islanders: Because a game on Long Island might mean we get to see Christie Brinkley in an Islanders jersey.

Feb. 19 - Canadiens: Because we're still waiting for Jose Theodore's water bottle to come back to earth.

Feb. 21 - At Flyers: Because Maxime Talbot will probably hope Antero Niittymaki gets the start.

Feb. 22 - At Capitals: Because the Penguins love playing in front of a "home" crowd.

Feb. 25 - Islanders: Because you don't have to see Miroslav Satan do this against the Penguins anymore:

Feb. 27 - At Blackhawks: Because Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane are a lighter version of Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin.

Tomorrow: "Why you'll watch - March."

Looking at the remaining free agents I can't help but think Brendan Shanahan could help this club.  He would have the veteran leadership of Roberts with a little more game to him.  He would be a solid 3rd line winger for Staal to give the Penguins 3 solid lines and be a great 2nd PP unit man.  Heck he could potentially move up to the 1st unit.  I don't see the harm in offering this guy an incentive driven contract.

Two of the games in Feb. are the ones I am most looking foward to this season.  Detroit coming back here and Hossa getting the Jagr treatment, which I believe fans have the right to do unlike a certain columnist for this paper.  And the matchup with the Blackhawks at the end of the month.  Can't wait for that game.

Looking forward to a road trip to Chicago for the late February game.  Hope to see some Pens fans out there.

As for the Lange/Steigerwald poll... I voted for Steigerwald. Not because I like him better than I like Mike Lange (that would be ridiculous), but because I won't be able to watch every game on FSN this year. On the other hand, I can listen to Mike Lange's play-by-play on the internet, and I can turn the radio broadcast on when I don't want to hear Mike Emrick on Versus or NBC or whatever station. This would not happen if Mike Lange was on FSN. I'm sure that argument has been made before, but I just wanted to throw in my two cents.

Personally, I can't wait to boo Hossa.

Since others are commenting on a certain columnist and his views that fans should not boo Hossa I will add my 2 cents.  As an outsider observing your sports community from Canada (near the home of Sid the Kid) I feel that those were some of the dumbest words ever collectively writen on a page.  Of course the people of Pittsburgh should boo Hossa!  The sports arena was made for this kind of thing.  In life we are always divided.  We are divided by race, divided by political parties and divided by religion.  The sports arena is the one place where a community can come together with a me vs. you attitude and it is alright.  It does not matter if a player is black or white, Christian or Muslim, Democrat or Republican, it only matters that he is or is not a Pittsburgh Penguin.  Hossa did not choose the good guys (from our perspective) the Pittsburgh Penguins but instead chose to join the bad guys (from our perspective) the Detroit Red Wings.  Why would this columnist deny the paying fans their God given right to pay money and let their voices be heard?  It would seem that this guy just does not understand sports and its place in our society.
