Why you'll watch - November

Here's an in depth look at the Penguins' November schedule:

Nov. 1 - At Blues: Because Brad Boyes is the best 40-goal scorer you don't know anything about.

Nov. 6 - Oilers: Because Ales Hemsky might be the most entertaining player in the league not named Ovechkin or Kovalchuk.

Nov. 8 - At Islanders: Because no matter how ugly the Penguins' Reebok Edge-Super-Duper-Mega-Ultra-Awesome-Humungo-Women-Will-Want-You Uniform System jerseys are, they're not nearly as bad as the Islanders' Reebok Edge-Super-Duper-Mega-Ultra-Awesome-Humungo-Women-Will-Want-You Uniform System jerseys.

Nov. 11 - At Red Wings: Because the last time the Penguins were in Joe Louis Arena this happened:

Nov. 13 - Flyers: Because this is the NHL's best rivalry.

Nov. 15 - Sabres: Because Bob Errey and Paul Steigerwald will make approximately 4,223 Winter Classic references.

Nov. 18 - Wild: Because new Penguins enforcer Eric Godard isn't afraid of the "Boogey Man," Derek Boogaard.

Nov. 20 - At Thrashers: Because Colby Armstrong is still your favorite Penguin, even if he isn't wearing the team's uniform anymore.

Nov. 22 - Canucks: Swedish twins.

Nov. 26 - at Islanders: Because maybe we can get Tyler Kennedy-Mike Comrie II.

Nov. 28 - At Sabres: Because Thomas Vanek is worth the price of admission.

Nov. 29 - Devils: Because watching Devils hockey can cure insomnia.

Tomorrow: "Why you'll watch - December."

EMPTY NETTER ASSISTS

Penguins

-Paul Steigerwald will return as the team's play-by-play voice for television.

-Shelly Anderson has more on Michel Therrien's new contract.

-Did the Penguins make the right decision giving Therrien a new deal? Vote on it here.

-The Penguins will serve as the Bruins opponent in their home opener Oct. 20. There's a slight problem however. The Patriots will be at home on Monday Night Football.

Atlantic Division

-The Devils signed AHL forwards Jon DiSalvatore, Chad Wiseman and defenseman Jay Leach.

-The Rangers are still mad at the NHL for jacking their Web site.

-The top ten hockey memories at the Spectrum in Philadelphia.

Northeast Division

-The Sabres signed Ryan Miller to a five-year deal worth $6.25 million per season. That certainly makes that deal Marc-Andre Fleury signed for roughly $5 million per season look even better.

-The Maple Leafs are giving away every ticket to one of their preseason games for free.

Southeast Division

-The Hurricanes will unveil a third Reebok Edge-Super-Duper-Mega-Ultra-Awesome-Humungo-Women-Will-Want-You Uniform System jersey.

Central Division

-The IIHF suspended the contract Predators forward Alexander Radulov signed with a team in the KHL. Despite that, Radulov still practiced with his new team.

-The Blackhawks officially named Jonathan Toews as their captain. The team will also retire the jerseys of former players Keith Magnuson and Pierre Pilote.

-Check out this photo gallery of the Blackhawks Convention being held this weekend.

-The Blackhawks have set up a FAQ section on their site concerning the Winter Classic. (Kudos to Kukla's Korner with the find.)

-Blackhawks owner Rocky Wirtz has brought his franchise back to life.

-Gary Bettman has some explaining to do over the Predators ownership fiasco.

Pacific Division

-New Kings coach Terry Murray is not the long-term solution in Los Angeles.

Adams Division

-Noted Hershey hockey bar Shakey's will be closing

Has anybody read the piece on Steigerwald being re-upped?  Smizek tries to credit him with the boost in ratings the Pens have gotten over the last couple of seasons.  What a joke.

Don't get me wrong, I think him and Errey do a fine job, despite the customary three-to-four gringe-inducing or puzzling comments they make about every game.

But are you kidding?  The reason the ratings were bad before Staggy was hired, was because the team was bad.  The reason they have gotten better with Staggy on the air is because the Pens are much better on the ice.  The higer ratings have absolutely nothing to do with Staggy being behind the mic.

Smizek sets up a quote by saying, Steigerwald won't take credit for the rise in ratings.  Exactly, because it's not his to take.

You want to give him a pat on the back for doing a good job, and give him kudos for a new deal, fine.  But, don't try to give credit where it isn't due.
