Penguins keep Orpik

The Penguins have signed defenseman Brooks Orpik to a six-year deal. TSN is reporting it's a six-year deal worth $22.5 million.

EN Says: What a roller coaster day for Ray Shero. We like the signing. It keeps the Penguins very physical on the blue line. We just wonder what they're going to do with all these NHL-caliber defenseman now. Orpik joins Mark Eaton, Hal Gill, Sergei Gonchar, Kris Letang, Rob Scuderi, Darryl Sydor, Ryan Whitney and prospect Alex Goligoski. Is a trade in the works perhaps?

Note: Rich Hammond of the Los Angeles Daily News is reporting Orpik was a player the Kings had targeted.

Wish they coudl have worked out the trade with Columbus for Zherdev! He would have been a great winger to have.

first.  It's about time Shero did something!

Who do you trade? Shouldn't have spent $2 million per year on Eaton.

damn, so close!

Sorry penzrule.

I am still reeling from the Hossa deal.  I figured we'd lose him, but why couldn't he have done it the old fashioned way and taken the most money?  The Red Wings are the new Patriots in my view.  It would be fitting for them to have a monster season only to lose in the finals.

As happy as i am to get Orpik back, I can't figure out why it took so long to agree on (imho) a reasonable deal while we are throwing money at Eaton like Halloween candy?

Maybe Shero signed him as a winger... I hear he plays that from time to time.....

Good signing.  My money is on Whitney being shipped.  Offensive defensemen have gotten insane money and there are still teams that need help.  For all those that are harping on Shero -- look at what he got done for one of the top FA d-men out there.  Compare it to the insane amounts paid for Redden and Ron Hainsey.  Shero looks brilliant for getting this done for a much cheaper cost.

I think that the Pens can get something good in return for Whitney. And maybe someone will take Sydor off their hands.

Out of curiousity, why the bitterness at the Red Wings?  Comparisons to the Yankees or Patriots?  The Wings didn't steal Hossa or overpay him.  He contacted them and offered to play for almost $2.5 million less than other offers out there. Orpik was a must in my opinion, since defense was where the Pens were suspect during the Cup run. tg

I'm glad Shero got out of bed and decided to do something today.  They desperately need to fill some holes on the top two lines.  I hope he doesn't go back to sleep before Jagr and Naslund sign somewhere else...

Finally getting a chance to soak in a little news, and hot damn, we kept the Candyman.  Unfortunately, my elation was tempered by losing Ruutu.  He might have been a kind of wild card, but he sure was entertaining to watch.

Regarding Hossa... Why or why did it have to be the Wings?

Agree w/ Expittriate.

Orpik = excellent signing.

Whitney is a good player.  Granted his 06-07 season was better than last year, but that happens sometimes.  He's a productive offensive rearguard and he's signed at a moderate price:  $4M per.  He's also got BIG upside.  I wouldn't be so quick to ship him out.  That said, I wouldn't be surprised if quite a few GMs feel the same way.  Plus, he's signed for FIVE more years.  You might get a king's ransom for Whitney.  In that case, I might consider it.  Might.  Prob not.

And $2M for Eaton is fine--assuming the knee is fine and he can stay off IR for once.

Sydor at $2.5M is the guy I'd move, if I could.

So much for the idea that players won't play for Therrien. If anyone was leaving because of the coach it sure seemed like it would be Orpik. Instead he stays for probably less than he could have  gotten somewhere else.

I can't help but think back to the Toronto Sun article where they stated that Orpik said he will not stay in Pittsburgh if Therrien is the coach.  Maybe it was a typo and they meant to say Orpik would sign at a discount.
