Hossa to Detroit

Marian Hossa will be playing in Detroit next season. TSN is reporting the deal is $7.4 million for one year.

EN Says: Huh? How exactly did the Penguins not land him then? They were offering a five-year deal for roughly $7 million according to some rumors. On the surface, this is a bit of a black mark on Ray Shero's track record. Obviously there's a lot more to negotiations than what we see on the surface, but how did this happen?

A short-term deal like this would've been ideal for the Penguins in regards to their salary cap issues down the road when the big money kicks in for Evgen Malkin and Jordan Staal.

But why would Hossa take a one-year deal? Why risk an injury without a long-term deal? Especially considering the length of some deals lesser players like Brian Campbell or Ryan Malone got. Lots of questions about this deal.

Guess Hossa was serious about that playing for a winner thing. That's certainly a team out of left field. There were rumors of the Rangers, Oilers, Bruins, Blackhawks, but the Red Wings? Wow.

Perhaps Hossa and Ty Conklin were really into car-pooling together or something.

This surely puts the Jaromir Jagr or even Markus Naslund to Pittsburgh talk into overdrive now.

Lord knows why we chose this photo.

OK. What sense does this make? If he can sign for anywhere from 4 to a reported possible 12 years with Boston, why would he risk an injury for one year at less money than he's worth?

I'm rooting for the Sharks in the West now.

wtf mate?

Just another reason to hate the Yankees of hockey.

How can Detroit fit Hossa's salary under the cap? I hope it bites them in the ass when they try to re-sign Zetterberg next year. Either way, the Wings are going to be scary good in 2008-09.

Maybe the Pens will sign Pat Falloon, Milan Kraft, or Robert Dome to play on Crosby's wing.

At least it is a Western Team, although they are about guaranteed to get to the Stanley Cup.  Ughhhhh!

Double J to the Rescue?

Bring on Jagr.

Okay, this one hurts.  If he had gone somewhere for a rediculous amount of money I'd understand it.  But this means something must be really wrong in Pittsburgh.  Need I bring in the "nobody wants to play for Therien" arguement for the third time in 2 days?  Nobody is adressing it but Therien may be the reason this Pittsburgh club never wins a Cup let alone many.

Why would Hossa do this? What if he has a crappy year -- or gets injured. This was to be the contract that set him up for life. I mean, he's risking tens of millions of dollars.

(Unless, of course, he's going to play one more year in the NHL and then scoot off to the new Russian Super League.)

Since Malkin's deal doesn't kick in until the following season, we could have done the same deal no problem, so either Shero wants to use that money this year for something particular or Hossa just didn't like being here after all.

Since this is a one-year deal, we get to go through this process again next year.

So if I follow the logic here, in order to get Hossa to sign with the Penguins next year, the Penguins themselves would have to win the Cup, yes?

Not a bad proposition...win the Cup, get Marian Hossa at a discount of his alleged market value.

puckman66 wrote re: Hossa to Detroit

This makes absolutely no sense.  Add to it that Hall and Conklin also took what I figure as less than what the Pens could have afforded, I'm not sure what Shero is doing at this point.  He seems to have pushed all the right buttons to get the team to the Final, but everything since is baffling at best.

Plus, how much sense does it make to still pursue Orpik with Eaton already signed.  Orpik would be the 9th NHL Dman signed (counting Goligoski) and we only have 8 forwards currently signed.

Something big better be coming because Hossa would have been great with a 5 year deal... but 1 year at 7.4 mil would have been a perfect cap fit since Staal and Malkin won't bump until next year.

I don't agree that this puts a black mark on Shero. Shero made a valid offer according to what Hossa has stated in the past that he wanted, now Hossa takes a one year deal? This puts a black mark on Hossa in my opinion. Malkin71 makes a intriguing point maybe it's Therien.

RobotJaxxon wrote re: Hossa to Detroit

I take from this that Hossa wants to win a cup, and that was the best the Wings were willing to offer him.

I have to believe the Pens would have matched that offer, so for some reason Hossa must think the Pens are unlikely to win a cup anytime soon.  Or he just didn't like playing here.

So, now that the monster deal from the deadline has fully played out, was it worth it?  I thought it was until a couple days ago.  I think Shero put too much importance on re-signing Hossa at the expense of losing other players he might now have wished to have signed before July 1.  The great playoff run inflated a lot of the players' value, and now they're getting picked apart around the edges.

BTW... There is no way a Jagr + Therien combo is good for anyone.  I foresee another Hlinka situation there.

This is a tough one to swallow.

If there are any silver linings we can use that money to maybe obtain/retain some other talent.

Malkin71 hit it right on the head. I can't blame Hossa for going to play on a GREAT team with a GREAT coach. Pittsburgh is a GREAT team, with a FAIR coach. Therrien has done a fair job bringing discipline to a young team, but I get the sense that a lot of vets like Roberts really clash with him. I wonder if this is something that management will consider before they sign up for more time with Iron Mike?

I think it says more that Hossa is a jerk than it does that Shero screwed up.

dps2002 wrote re: Hossa to Detroit

Let's also put this forward with respect to Hossa's possible motivation in this deal.

Since its introduction, the salary cap has taken a steady increase.  One of the clauses of the salary cap is that no team can pay more than 20% of the cap to any one player.  With this year's $56.7M cap (or whatever it is), that means a maximum annual salary of $11.34 million this year.

Hossa's motivation in taking a one-year deal with the defending champs may be this:  Spend one year with the best team in the league, put up absolutely torrid numbers alongside Datsyuk, Zetteberg, Holmstrom, et al. in Detroit, win a championship, then cash in next year when (if) the cap increases.

Sure, he's risking an injury in this deal, but no reward ever comes without risk.

GREAT team with a GREAT coach? Are you serious? Maybe if you consider the devil himself GREAT, than I can see your point. But only then.

Hossa signing with the Yankees of Hockey is like an embraced Steeler signing with New England. This kills me and the fine people of Pittsburgh should all be outraged that we're going to have to play an even stronger Detroit team in the Stanley Cup Final next year.

I hate Hossa. I hate Hossa more than Tom Brady.

I am flabbergasted....Hossa to Detriot?  Huh?  How could Shero not get this done?  We'll add Detroit to the list of teams to REALLY  REALLY HATE.  Flyers, NYR, NYI  and now DTW ...geesh the wagon is getting full.

Balki Bartokomous wrote re: Hossa to Detroit

I agree with KL. A jerk - that is what Marian Hossa is. Spell his name backward and he is also the first three letters capitalized.

Shero more than likely did everything in his power while preserving an intelligent decision toward the Pens future. There is just nothing you can do when a player is determined on leaving a particular organization. Hossa lied to the media. He had no intention of signing with Pittsburgh. $7.4 mill for a year? Come on, it's obvious that that offer was on the table for him in Pittsburgh.

I heard a rumor that during the final handshake of the Stabley Cup, Hossa said he wished he played for the Red Wings. I never gave this rumor any credibility until about a half hour ago. What a devious human being Marian Hossa is.

Very confusing, wonder why he chose this and not any of those other offers.  Looks like a repeat for Motown.

PenInDetroit wrote re: Hossa to Detroit

Why does anyone think Hossa is a jerk or the WIngs are evil?  He got an offer that was higher then the one he had on the table, with a team that is a proven winner.  Think objectively, people.  Signing Hossa for 7 mil multi years would have been the worst thing the Pens couldve done.  Then they would have 42 mil locked up on 7 players (if Fleury signs for 5 and Staal for 4, and that's on the cheap estimate) for the next 4-6 years.  Think Tampa Bay on that one.

DC Fleury Fanatic wrote re: Hossa to Detroit

I don't think this is as bad as a lot of people do.  I guess Hossa wasn't happy with any of the long-term offers and decided to take his chances next year.  It's one less distraction for the Pens.  Besides, with a one-year contract Hossa is going to be trade bait come the trading deadline.  Maybe he'll end up back with the Pens for the Cup run.

pensinaustin wrote re: Hossa to Detroit

Agree with DC Fleury Fanatic, minus the re-signing of Hossa "for the cup run."  Hossa looks untrustworthy (again) & Shero looks a little embarrassed, but Hossa's replaceable and the Penguins will do better focusing on developing their young talent.  After this episode it's also just very hard to see Hossa as a team player.  Also, Jagr, if the Pens can nab him, will more than fill Hossa's skates.

I really gotta get back to work...

RichYan33 wrote re: Hossa to Detroit

Funny. We all knew Hossa was a rent a player but once we saw what he could really do we went "Oooooooo...what if he'll sign to have a chance to win a Cup." Well he did sign to win a Cup. Just with the team that actually won the Cup.

But suddenly he's public enemy number one. Maybe he just didn't like any of the situations available and decided to rope-a-dope, play with a REALLY good team, and hit the market again next year.

Titus Groan wrote re: Hossa to Detroit

First of all, according to NHL.com the Wings were contacted by Hossa's agent.  Hossa expressed a desire to play for the Wings, because a fellow Czech is there - Kopecky - who said the organization is a good one.  The Yankees accusation is sour grapes - everyone has been playing under the same salary cap.  And while the Wings did go after some marquee names, their draft picks were formingthe blood and guts of the team:  Lidstrom, Holmstrom, Datsyuk, Zetterberg, etc...  All fo these guys were picked late in the draft and could walk onto any team in the league.  They haven't had a top ten draft choice in 20 years or so.  Their GM is pretty cagey.  And unless Hossa wins the Hart, Conn Smythe, Lady Bing, Selke, and Bat Masterton trophies, he will be traded/released so they can sign Zetterberg and Franzen to long term deals. tg
