Rights to Malone, Roberts dealt to Tampa Bay

The Penguins dealt the negotiating rights of Ryan Malone and Gary Roberts to Tampa Bay earlier today. In return, the Penguins get a conditional draft pick.  Should Malone sign with the Lightning, the Penguins would get a third rounder. If he doesn't sign, they get a fourth rounder.

We like the move. It's making the best out of a less than stellar situation. The Penguins were definitely going to lose Roberts and probably Malone on Tuesday. Why not get something tangible out of it?

I'd really like to see Malone back. He's really come in to his own this year and he's very valuable on the PP as well as being solid with Malkin and Sykora. Add in his grit and you've got a big piece of the Cup puzzle. I hope money loses out to a very good chance at Stanley for him, but who can blame him if he goes for the cash?

They play hockey in Tampa Bay?

It's clear the new regime wants to start off the year with a bang and attempt to sign two popular players.  Where Malone is an exceptional player, I can't help but feel that he was one of those players who had the benefit of playing with other stellar players around him.  I compare him to Kevin Stevens -- someone that was awesome with Lemieux and Jagr, but struggled after he left Pittsburgh.  The only difference is that Tampa has some good scorers and Malone, if he signs, should fit in OK on a line with Lecavalier.  The question is -- will Malone be overpaid, no matter what team he ends up on?

Roberts to Florida?  Where else do people go when they're ready to retire?

(Please don't tell Roberts I said that?  I hear before he goes to sleep, the Boogeyman checks under his bed and in his closet for Gary Roberts.)

Milwakee Hockey - I blatantly disagree...

Stevens did benefit from playing with Mario, no doubt. However, his downfall had more to do with smashing his face on the Mellon Arena ice that awful night in 1993. He never was the same player - people fail to realize he would have died on the ice if he were smaller and more fragile.

Why is it that when people mention Cam Neely everyone gets all giddy, using the Samuelsson hit as fodder as to why he is a HOF player, assuming he'd keep that pace up. No one seems to mention he got to play with two great, top-of-the-line playmaking pivots (Oates and Janney) in his prime. Stevens is no different than Neely - Benefit of playing with top playmakers, short, unreal goal scoring prime, and of course - retired before their time. .

If we are going to take into account the short shelf life of Power Forwards from that area when evaluating their credentials (Neely) and elect these "running backs of hockey" into the HOF, Stevens definitely belongs.

Malone may fit the same mold the way he plays (only not as great). I love him as a Penguin as much as anyone - but he's just not a $5M player, sorry.

CrosbyShow -- I blatantly disagree with your statement as well.  The season following his injury, Stevens came back to record 88 points (41 goals, 47 assists)...not too shabby.  Even with his injury-plagued season in 94-95, he managed to average a point a game in the 27 games he played.  I maintain that because he really had no premier linemate (as well as his addition to drugs and hookers), he wasn't able to maintain the scoring pace that he had earlier in his career.

I agree with you that Malone isn't worth the money he's supposedly asking.
