Sen. Arlen Specter's latest pitch to the left wing of his party is an op-ed in the Huffington Post today in support of a "robust" public option. Mr. Specter, D-Pa., who's facing a primary challenge from Rep. Joe Sestak, D-Delaware County, this Spring, says he wants a healthcare plan that's more liberal than the Senate Finance Committee bill, which is expected to pass on Tuesday. That measure does not have a government-run health insurer competing as part of a menu of choices in the newly created "exchange." The three versions of the bill to pass through House committees and the one that passed the Senate health committee -- supported there by Sen. Bob Casey Jr., D-Pa. -- do have public options.
"The public option will create competition in the marketplace and will
help to provide affordable choices for American families. It will also
allow us to greatly expand the number of Americans with health
insurance, and that is an imperative," Mr. Specter wrote.
