The conservative Club For Growth, which won a court challenge several weeks ago for the right to contact Sen. Arlen Specter's donors, will hit 6,000 donors this week with letters telling them how to ask for a refund. When the Pennsylvania senator switched from Republican to Democrat in April, he offered to give a refund to anyone who donated to his campaign while he was still a Republican. So far his campaign says Mr. Specter has given out about $220,000 in refunds, mostly to former Republican Congressional colleages and their Political Action Committees. In Club For Growth's letter, which can be found on its Web site, the group seeks to show the donors how easy it is to get their money back -- and even provides a form letter to do so.
"While there is nothing in the election law or regulations that require Sen. Specter to give you a refund, we believe his clear public statements and refund policy will ensure that you get a refund if you request one," the club's president, Chris Chocola, writes in the letter. The letters target only those who gave before the party switch and are personalized with the amount of the person's donation.
The former president of the anti-tax group is Pat Toomey, who is running for the Specter Senate seat as a Republican.
