This morning, President Barack Obama went to Bathesda, Md., to tour a facility for the National Institutes of Health and announce that $5 billion in stimulus money will go to NIH research across the country. Joining him was Sen. Arlen Specter, D-Pa., who was last seen out with the POTUS in Philadelphia when Mr. Obama did a fundraiser for the Republican-turned-Democrat. Mr. Specter, a cancer survivor and long a major supporter of NIH funding, helped secure the grants -- and secured some more presidential love for it.
"We are so happy to have Senator Arlen Specter, who is
directly responsible for so much of the funding for NIH research," Mr. Obama said, according to a transcript of his remarks. "He is a
huge champion for your cause. And I know you already gave him a rousing round
of applause, but I just want to echo what a great job he's been doing and what
a great partner he's been."
According to the White House, 208 projects at the University of Pittsburgh will be funded, along with 16 at Carnegie Mellon University. Several other projects in the region also received funding.
