Chris Matthews was "very inquisitive about the lay of the land in Western Pa" in a recent talk with Allegheny County's Dem Committee chair, Jim Burn, but he stopped short of saying he will run for Senate in 2010.
Burn is among the Dem party leaders Matthews has talked to statewide, which has generated a lot of talk this week, including this report on Burn and others in PoliticsPa. Burn said he and Matthews have had a couple conversations lately about Arlen Specter's seat and the MSNBC host has been "very coy and holding his cards very close" about announcing a run.
Since most of the other names out there in the Democratic field are, like Matthews, from the Philly area, Burn said the TV host would have a major name recognition advantage out west. He also likes his political bona fides.
"I was very blunt -- I told Chris I thought he would be an outstanding candidate for this office," Burn said in a telephone interview.
