HALFWAY HOME - PITT 17, RUTGERS 10

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- The first half was, well, it was interesting to say the least. It was also a clinic in bad, or more accurately, dumb, football by both teams.

Dumb penalties, mental mistakes, turnovers and an officiating crew that seems to have no idea what they are doing as every penalty flag thrown seems to bring out a Keystone Kops like moment in them as they huddle, then huddle some more…..

It has not been the finest moment for Big East football. The good news for Pitt is that the Panthers are leading the game. But missed opportunities – like a missed field goal and a ball overthrown to Dorin Dickerson for a touchdown – could come back to haunt the Panthers in the second half.

Things to watch for in the second half….

  1. Pitt is running a lot on first down and that is leaving the Panthers in second and long and playing right into the hands of Rutgers defense. The Panthers need to start throwing on first some in order to set up some shorter yardage situations on second and third down. They did it a little bit on the scoring drive that put them ahead 17-7 and it helped slow down the blitz a little bit.
  2. Rutgers didn’t blitz as much early in the game but started to and it clearly gave the Panthers some problems. That begs the question – where are all the screen passes Frank Cignetti talked about in the preseason?
  3. Mistakes obviously always change games, but the Panthers need to avoid the killer ones that allow quick, easy scores – like Rutgers first touchdown of the game.
  4. Pitt is getting absolutely no pressure on Tom Savage and it has allowed him to make some plays throwing the football. If the Panthers don’t do a better job of it in the second half I think the Scarlet Knights will make some big plays in the passing game against the Panthers secondary.
  5. Dan Hutchins missed one field goal but came right back and made a 45-yarder and that is a good thing because it seems like they’ll need him in the second half to make some big kicks under pressure.
  6. Rutgers has had three different guys take direct snaps and Pitt has for the most part not been fooled. The first time the Scarlet Knights went to the Wildcat, however, it went for a touchdown but that had as much to do with Mohamed Sanu making a great play and just being a ridiculous athlete as it did anything with the formation.
  7. Max Gruder has had a chance to get two sacks and missed them both. This defense needs to make big plays when it has a chance and it has instead made a lot of mistakes and really dumb penalties. The Panthers better clean this up or it is going to be a long second half.
  8. Pitt better get Rutgers this year because the next few could be tough sledding as it looks to me like the Scarlet Knights have some extremely talented young players who, with a little experience, will become dangerous players.

Oh well, at least we're winning, but you're right on about the sloppy play and poor play calling on first down.  Just atrocious!  Hopefully, they'll at least try to go down field to Baldwin in the second half...maybe just once...please!!!

I can't believe Dave Wannstedt is lauded as a defensive coach. They look clueless out there. They don't blitz until the end of the half - and they get to the quarterback, but when they do, they can't bring him down. It's like they've never even PRACTICED blitzing.

....and the idiocy that is having a linebacker cover their fastest wide receiver just cannot be explained. I should be dumbfounded when something like  that happens, but it happens in every game!

This is why Clint Session was a dud at Pitt, but can go on and start for what is probably the NFL's best team right now.

Rutgers fans were booing their own team!  OMG.  Are you and Smizik going to talk about it now for the next 6 weeks?

...and Pitt starts the second half about as slowly as you could possible imagine.

A game that really shouldn't be close could very well be tied within 5 minutes.

Hand-off to Lewis.  Ballgame.

Twenty minutes from the Top 25.

It's not over, because Pitt insists on doing things the dumb, hard, and baffling way.

They gash Rutgers' defense running the ball...it was really looking like Rutgers D was getting worn down. But then, they decide to throw - Stull fumbles, Rutgers gets the ball at midfield.

It's only a 2-touchdown game, which is NOTHING. This game should be long over, but because Pitt STILL has trouble putting teams away, it's not.

What can you do but shake your head?

See?

The defensive philosophy for this team is absurd. Five years in, and Dave Wannstedt STILL doesn't get it. Passive defense means games are closer than they should be.

This is college football, not the NFL. Screw "field position football." Destroy your opponent, the way toe GOOD teams do.

But those teams have really good head coaches, whereas Pitt has a mediocre one.

Let's hope Pitt doesn't find a way to bungle this game.  Rutgers has not been very good and yet is only a TD down.  Twice Pitt has been in decent field position and stupid mistakes cost them from taking a bigger lead.  Stull's fumble can't happen there.  Period.  If they end up somehow losing this game, it would be a monumental collapse.

Well, it wasn't pretty, but I'll take it.

Although It was really tough to watch at times, Pitt's defense got the job done. But, I agree that only rushing four guys all night against a frosh QB, in his first conf. game, made little to no sense and almost cost us the game.

The play calling in the first half left a lot to be desired.

The second half wasn't much better, but at least the o-line and Lewis took over the game, which ultimately led to the win.

Bottom line, We're 6 - 1 and bowl eligible.

Oh yeah, Bill Stull looked great in the first half, but he completely fell apart in the second half.  The fumble on the 50 during the 4th quarter was just one example, the missed pass attempt to a wide open Baldwin, which would have led to an easy score and a 21 point lead, was just terrible.  He needs to be a lot more consistant if we want to win the Big East.

This game was hard to watch- too much talent- too poorly coached. Mistakes like the ones against Rutgers will result in a loss next week

1.  Cignetti had been doing a good job of mixing up the run and pass on first down in previous games but  tonight he made it easy for Rutgers because it was run, run and run....Lack of screens to slow down the blitz...Very unimaginitive offense game plan tonight....It shouldnt have bene left up to Hutchins on the last drive - go for the jugular, at least on 3rd down and go to Baldwin - max protect because they would blitz and let Baldwin's athletic ability takeover...

2.  Stull - the prayer that he threw to Baldwin on the final drive was Stull in a nutshell - poor decision - getting rid of the ball in the face of a blitz - off back foot and flinching to protect himself from getting hit....Talk all about his passing rating but in crunch time under pressure, he wilts like a flower in the Sahara.

3.  Bennett's schemes that have LB's on WR's is truly a head scratcher.  Has he ever been asked to rationally explain how this is a sound scheme?

4.  Bone-headed personal fouls and poor tackling - can the finger be pointed to the coaches for this or are these players uncoachable?  I ask because these same problems occur week after week.  My guess is that the players are at fault - I cant believe that Wannstedt and staff do not go over these issues day after day.....

They got lucky tonight  -if this was Cincy or West Va, they might be coming back home with an "L".

All excellent points Sarcastic Sword.

#1 Agree Pitt ran way too much on 1rst down and became

predictable.  Even though Dion had 180, he had alot of runs that

went for nothing or little gain.

#2 Stull did get lucky there, but it was offset by his 'found'

running ability.  I was amazed he ran  several times for

sizeable gains and I believe a couple of first downs.

#3  When I saw Gunn trying to cover their little LaRod Stephens

type WR on a crossing route, I was like, you have to be kidding me.

A middle LB on their fastest WR, makes alot of sense.....NOT.

#4  Gruder & Romeus making bonehead plays on 1 play on a

freshmen QB. On another play

Gruder was in for a sack but couldn't bring down a freshmen.

I live in Charlotte, do not remember Gruder being recruited by

any ACC programs.  He didn't play in the Charlotte Public High

School league which is very good.  He went to some private school in Charlotte ala Sewickley Academy (how good football wise is that, not very) Question, Pitt recruited several highly recruited LB's, I can't believe based on what I've

seen that Gruder is better than them.  Who is Maximillian Gruder?

And why is he playing 1rst string.  He's more like a Special teamer.

Hate to be so negative but this team should be blowing out stiffs like UConn & Rutgers by at least 3 TD's.  You have to ...to get

some respect nationally.  And that I take it, is Wannstedt's goal,

to make Pitt a player on the National scene ala the period from

1975-1985.  Hopefully like 1976 and 1979-1982 when Pitt was

either #1 or #2 ......undefeated or 11-1 3 years in a row.

From the replay, it looked like Gunn was covering the WR because it was zone coverage.  Unless you have a dime package out there, you're going to get those sorts of match ups short over the middle.

Let's remember that this defense that was supposedly in poor schemes and not getting enough pressure really was only responsible for 14 points at most, assuming you hold them accountable for not holding Rutgers to a field goal  after the special teams turnover.

And let's cut Gruder a little slack.  He's second on the team in tackles with 49, including 10 last night.  He's not perfect, but he's far from hopeless out there.
