Pitt 17, N.C. State 10 - Half

RALEIGH, N.C. -- I'm not sure what to make of this game right now to be honest.

The Panthers have dominated field position, N.C State has made a bunch of mistakes -- including some of the most horrible clock management I've ever seen right before the half -- and yet the Wolfpack are only down by seven points.

Pitt has run the ball reasonably well and has made some plays in the passing game but the offense seems to have gone a little bit into its shell already -- and this game is a long way from being over. The Panthers are probably going to have to score a few more points to win this game because their defense is struggling a little bit.

Some key stats: N.C. State is outgaining Pitt 230-138 (like I said, field position has been huge) and has a 19-11 advantage in time of possession.

Cam Saddler has seen more time than usual at receiver and we've seen a little bit more of Steve Dell on defense as well. Tackling is, like the Buffalo game, a problem, particularly in the secondary and frankly this game would probably be going the other way if Mick Williams wasn't playing like he is a man on a mission.

Things to look for in the second half:

1.) Pitt needs to get Dion  Lewis and that running game going again. The Panthers needs some drives and some success in getting first downs to keep their defense on the sideline. The Panthers got a little too conservative late in the half and don't want to fall into that trap, but Lewis has been running hard.

2.) Pitt's best -- and maybe only - defense thus far has been Dan Hutchins and a bunch of penalties, mistakes and bad decisions by N.C. State's offense. The Wolfpack have nine penalties for 61 yards already and that is something that they can';t count on getting in the second half. The secondary and pass coverage has been awful - there are guys running wide open all over the field.

3.) Sitting up here in the press box and watching the plays develop - I'm not sure if Pitt's secondary has any idea what it is doing. There are plays when some guys are in man, some look like they are in zone and after ever reception there seems to be at least one guy waving his arms as if to say "what the heck just happened?" I don't know what the problem is, but it needs to get solved quickly.

4.) If Mick Williams isn't first-team All-Big East than that honor means absolutely nothing because it is a sham. He's the best player on this field right now and he's made some big-time plays out there..

If we don't win this game, we are a sham.

This is one of the worst defenses I've ever seen in my life. They're about to blow a two-touchdown lead with EASE.

Wannstedt is simply not a good head coach. Period. This program is a mediocrity and it starts at the top, with the grand poobah of medicrity, Dave Wannstedt.

Dave Wannstedt's an embarrassment. His offense makes the most of its yardage and puts up a ton of points....but his defense (which is his "speciality") is the most useless, hate-worthy defense since those 2003 versions under Walt Harris that were gouged by the likes of VT and Notre Dame.

Wannstedt is absolutely useless.

Its Barnett that coaches the defense if I remember correctly not Wannstedt.

This defense is a joke and to be honest I'm tired of the disappearing act of Lewis in the 2nd half once again.  I think this kid has 500 yards rushing in the 1st half of games and 100 total in the 2nd half.  Stull is absolutely horrible.

Bill Stull cannot hit a moving target.  He is absolutely and I mean absolutely horrible.  1st and Goal with the game on the line.  He's not a leader.  No one even close on that 4th down play.  Doesn't even give a guy a chance.  RIDICULOUS.

I cant watch anymore of this game...Phil Bennett should be FIRED right now..i never seen a defense play so horrible in all my years as a player and coach..lets not forget his track record was horrible before he came to PITT. his defenses always lost this way...i feel bad for the kids..they dont deseve this...they are a lost bunch and its only going to get worst!

BOOOOOOOOO BILL STULL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you are the worst QB that has ever picked up a football. You want to know why people (ME) BOOOed stull the first game is because this is what you get from him. Who was that last pass to the security guard in the 5th row? 4th Down i would rather see him throw it in the middle of the end zone up for grabs. BOOOOOO Stull thanks for ruining pitts season you are horrible.

Bill Stull certainly sucks, but he played well enough for Pitt to win.

THIS WAS ALL ON THE DEFENSE. PERIOD.

Dave Wannstedt has shown his true colors as one of the worst head coaches in all of college football.

Pitt's secodary can't run, can't cover and can't tackle!!  Dom Decicco is the worst safety I've ever seen play the game! He is a total liablity right now and should be benched immediately! Aaron Berry doesn't even try to tackle and he's always out of position! He should be benched immediately too!

Pitt's linebackers looked liked they didn't have a clue what was going on this entire game! I've never seen three linebackers vanish on the field of play like these three young men did today!

What happened to Greg Romeus and Jabaal Sheard?  Were they even playing today?

How can wide receivers, running backs and tight ends be wide open on every passing play when your only rushing four guys?  How is that possible?

The offense looked good until they got up by 14.  After that they went three and out on every possesion!

All and all, this was a total disgrace!  A complete debacle!  Dave Wannstedt is clearly not the man to take Pitt football to the next level!  For this team to lose the way they did is completely unacceptable, considering this is year five for Wannstedt!

I can't see Pitt doing any better than 7-5,after this latest setback!  They're not going in the right direction and it's time for a change!

This defense if HORRIBLE.  Yeah the linebackers make a lot of tackles...but they make them 8 yards down field.  The DB's have no clue what's going on...#31 doesn't want to tackle anyone, and Fields is out in left field.  I have a nickname for the entire defensive backfield...TOAST.  This is purely a coaching issue.  You can't tell me Boise State, and Utah etc. are getting better players than Pitt...but they clearly are better coached.

Sorry I'm not at all in favor of removing Wannstedt.  He continues to land recruit after recruit.  Yes they have to start to perform but to me they are better off today than they were under Walt Harris.

Who has Wann recruited? Bunch of local guys with no speed.

Over hyped as usual, Bill Stull didn't lose this game. The D is awful. Buffalo got wiped out by Temple. Don't want to hear about PITTS D. Got beat by a baseball player masquerading as a QB.

Stull and the Defense lost this ball game along with the coaches. Great play calling at the end of the game. high school coaches call better games.  The DB's are not even good. the bearcats will light us up once they get done laughing at this game film.

once again typical pitt athletics, just when you think they maybe turning the corner and actually becoming a top 25 program, or going to a final four, they come out and break your heart!  I should be used to it after what thirty years of disapointments, but i keep drinking this crappy kool aid!

ps not a bad game from stull but how do you not throw it up for grabs on 4th down instead of throwing it away?

mick williams and gus mustakas are the only players worth a lick on this defense!

i keep hearing how good aaron berry is but i don't see it!   we should line up in a punt block formation and hope we can sack the qb before he gets a pass off,  because covering the recievers with this secondary and covering them with no one is one in the same!

THIS DEFENSE STINKS!  THE END

..and one last comment...let's get over this notion that the best high school football and players come out of Western PA. This may have been true 30 years ago, but no longer.   I've lived in Texas, Florida, Louisiana, and Cali, and the speed of the game on the high school level is night and day compared to WPA.  The WPIAL has played several games over the past few years against teams from other states and have lost the overwhelming majority of those games...Moral of the story...expand the recruiting circle outside of WPA...Pitt isn't getting the top WPA recruits (can you say Penn State, Michigan, Ohio State) so going after second level recruits from other areas might be a good idea.

Anyone who thinks Pitt is better off now than under Walt (who I hated) is not paying attention.

They're exactly the same. Exactly. Mediocre in every way.

Louder your absolutely ignorant if you think that they are just the same as they were under Harris.  I guess all you account for is the wins and losses.

Dom DeCicco and Aaron Berry cost us this game, not Bill Stull!! 31 points should have been more than enough to win this game!!  I could do a better job of tackling than DeCicco and Berry (and I'm a 40 + year old man with a bad back)!! Who is teaching these young men how to tackle, Mickey Mouse!!!???!!!

Also, I put in a call to 911 to report the disappearance of Romeus and Sheard.  Still no luck in locating either one of them.  Expect to see them on the back of the milk carton tomorrow!!

Sorry TJK33, but you're wrong! This is exacktly how we lost under Harris and there's been no improvement at all!!  We should have gone after Tom Bradley, now there's a guy who can coach and recruit!  As far as I'm concerned we should can Wannstedt and make the kind of offer($$$) to Bradley he can't possibly refuse!!

Account for wins and losses? What else is there? Walt was mediocre, smoke-and-mirrors...but Wannstedt has ONE winning season (and that winning season resulted in one of the most degrading and disgusting bowl game performances in history).

Well, this is year five, with all of that "great" recruiting - and Pitt is as pathetic defensively as the hugely disappointing Walt team of 2003, when Kevin and Julius Jones ran roughshod over them.

Salieri loves both Wannstedt and Walt - he is their king. (Watch the movie "Amadeus" if you don't understand)

Wow this game clearly set this program back "big time" with all the loses and upsets, Pitt was in the best position to gain national recognition and they blew it once again!!! im not sure wannstedt is the guy to get Pitt to the next level...what you see is what you get and im tired of the excuses. The WHOLE defensive coaching staff should be held accountable for this debacle, i feel like wannstedt is too old fashioned for todays college game...case in point bill stull clearly isnt a championship caliber QB, but yet we stay with him, I look at the Qb on NCstate and i think, hey we have a QB just like that with similar ability,,oh wait hes playing wide receiver now...no hes holding a clip board!!!!

Great, Penn State just lost too!  Normally I would be happy about that, but I just can't seem to find any joy in it right now!

What happened to Northeastern football!!!???!!!  We used to be able to hold our own, but not anymore!  So, Let's look at the main players in the east and lets try to figure this mess out.

Penn State, Pitt, Boston College, Syracuse and West Virginia, the top five Northeastern football programs.  Where did it all go wrong?

Personnly, I blame Pitt and Penn State for this disaster, with Syracuse and BC bringing up the rear (WVU you get a pass on this, you have done everything in your power to keep Northeastern football relavent, and for that I thank you).

Because of their (our) petty differences, eastern football has completely fallen off the face of the map.  With PSU abandoning the east for the midwest (what were you thinking ) and BC blowing off the east for the south (again, what were you thinking), and Pitt blowing off the eastern eight for the Big East, we are left with a shell of what was once great football!  So sad, so very sad!!  And the best part is we just keep shooting ourselves in the foot.  Our constant bickering and attacks on each others national credibility (you can thank eastern media for that too) has played right into the hands of the other conferences, who do none of that!  As a result we have lost respect nationally (Hey Nitters this includes you too, hurts doesn't it)!  Even though we all do a good job recruiting locally, our national presence in the recruiting wars is a joke and as a result we get the SEC and Big 12 leftovers, which of course just isn't cutting it!

What's the answer? I wish I new!  I'm just afraid the damage is done and the effects are irreversible as it seams the SEC and the Big 12 have taken over.  I'm beginning to thinkl I may never live to see another National Champion come out of the east!  And at the end of the day who do we have to blame? Well that one is easy to answer, just go look in the mirror.

Ok.  Let me preface my comments with the following:  As a Pitt alum, I consider myself to be a loyal and (for the most part) understanding fan.

With the said, I was really looking forward to Saturday's matchup against NC State.  Indeed, the game would serve as a good barometer of where Pitt stands as a football team.  Being that I now live in Orlando, I haven't been able to watch much of Pitt this season.  I saw the Buffalo game and obviously it raised some concerns.  But I gave the Panthers the benefit of the doubt.  After all, I have read all season (and training camp for that matter) that the defensive was loaded with talent and likely the strength of our team.

Well, after the NC State game, I find that laughable.  All season, everyone under the sun has made excuses for the defense.  I heard, "the makes are fixable," "we have all the talent in the world, we just need to tackle better," "there have just been a few mental mistakes, people out of position."

To that I say, HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

I hate to call out college players.  They are kids first and foremost.  BUT this is comical.  Dom Decicco is beyond bad.  He guy couldn't tackle ME to save his life (and yes, I really do mean that).  As for the defensive ends, wow, oh yea, you guys are NFL ready.  Stull, not a bad game, played well at times.  But he couldn't connect on the two biggest plays of the game.  The time he missed Baldwin over the middle  late in the second half and then the final series of the game.  It's 4th down, please just give someone a chance to make a play.  Nope, instead he gave a fan a souvenir.

Lastly, Wanny.  I love the fact that he is a Pitt guy.  NFL experience.  Hard-nose, smash mouth football.  The only problem is....he DOESN'T WIN.  Nice recruits, too bad they can't tackle.  Nice recruits, too bad they can't make clutch throws.  Nice recruits, too bad they can't get pressure on the qb.  And to top it off, he says, "We gave enough effort to win..."  What is that?

Oh well, we are what we are.  We are a respectable team but certainly not an elite team.  Regardless, I'll still cheer the same every game.  i just wanted to finally put my two cents in.  Thanks.
