PITT-VILLANOVA II

Villanova's victory over Duke tonight sets up the first Regional Final between two Big East teams since 1987, when Providence beat Georgetown to go to the FInal Four.

Pitt and Villanova will play tomorrow night with the Panthers attempting to reach their first Final Four since 1941.

It will be the second meeting between Pitt and Villanova this season. The Wildcats won the first game, 67-57, in the final college basketball game played at the Philadelphia Spectrum.

Pitt turned the ball over 17 times against the Villanova press in that game.

DeJuan Blair could only play 23 minutes because of foul trouble. He scored just seven points and had eight rebounds.

Tyrell Biggs only played 15 minutes. He did not score and only had three rebounds.

Villanova outscored Pitt, 41-26, in the second half to erase a five-point halfitme deficit.

It should be fun.

Obviously Blair and Biggs both have to play a lot of minutes for Pitt to have a chance, but the biggest challenge is for Pitt to slow the game down against 'Nova.  Pitt cannot beat 'Nova if the game is in the 70s .  Fields will again be the key but this time it will be controlling tempo instead of possibly making the big shot at the end.

Hopefully , Blair will not be pulled out after the first foul . He must get into the flow of the game and not sit for long portions.

Playing Smart!

The analysts are projecting Pitt doom because they barely won in all 3 games, compared to say, UConn's blowout of Chattanooga. Well, to me, it was a waste of effort. If they wanted to intimidate or make themselves look good for the media, they accomplished that. But hype and energy conservation in a long tournament road are antithetic to each other. Connecticut scored 55 points too many, because in the end, nobody cares how BIG you won, just IF you've won.

Pitt is playing smart, being cautious with fouls, maybe overly, but I think it's payback time for Villanova. Look for Pitt to win.
