Manfred Honeck's profound vision of Mozart's Requiem

Mozart's Reqiuem, HostiasPlease give a read to my piece on Manfred Honeck's profound take on Mozart's Requeim, with a good deal of audio clips. What a fantastic idea to contextualize this work, and what an amazing piece of music. If you are already tired of Christmas carols, come to Heinz Hall this weekend to hear one of the most inspired compositions every written, even if he never did complete it! Left is a page of the manuscript that shows the Hostias movement unfinished. This may be the last notes Mozart wrote, although it might be the Lacrimosa...

I was at the concert last night and was absolutely floored by it.  I was worried that the Mozart interpretation would have quite a potential for kitsch, but there was no kitsch, no corniness, just beauty.  Honeck's interpretation of the music was superb, but most impressive was his pacing.  When he waited for dead silence before repeating the Lacrimosa...I have never heard Heinz Hall so quiet!  No one coughed for ten seconds!  It was clear that everyone in the audience was moved in some manner.

Also, as I discussed with my friends afterward, we all came to the conclusion that the soprano may have had the most beautiful voice any of us have heard live in concert.

Glad to see you enjoyed the concert scheimerm.  I sang in it with the Mendelssohn, and I have to say that we too were floored by Ms. Reiss' performance.  After our first time rehearsing the Laudate Dominum with her, Honeck the PSO and the choir all stopped to applaud. It was certainly well deserved.
