Savran's final show set for Monday

By Bob Smizik | Thursday, 11 a.m.

``Sportsbeat with Savran,'' the longest running sports show in the Pittsburgh market, will stage its finale Monday night on FSN Pittsburgh. It will be a two hour-special commemerating the end of the show. The program also will air tonight at tomorrow at 6:30 p.m.

Host Stan Savran said today on his 1250 ESPN talk show that he still is in negotiations with with FSN for a continuation of his contract, which is set to expire. His specific duties under a new contract are not known.

The show, originally called, ``Sportsbeat,'' debuted March 11, 1991. Savran joined as host about a year later.

The decision to cancel the show was made by LIberty Media, the parent company of FSN Pittsburgh. It is believed that financial reasons prompted the decision.

Terrible decision.  Out of towners like me love to hear Stan and his analysts talk about all things Pittsburgh.

The show will be missed.

Did the Nutting family purchase Liberty Media recently?  If so, I'm sure they will trade Stan for a couple of communications majors at Duquesne University and a Pitt journalism graduate to be named later.

what are they gonna put in that time slot? From the highs of the Steelers Super Bowl win, Pens Stanley cup run, to the lows of hearing of this, how will out of town Burgh fans get there "sports fix" on everything pittsburgh? Sad day, i"m with ya, cancelling FSN package on directtv....I will miss the round tables the most, pens, steelers,

Great, now we get to watch an extra hour of Best Damn Top 50 reruns or European Poker Tour 97.  Next thing you know, Fox will only broadcast Pens and Pirates home afternoon games next year.  Building a brand new studio in a dwindling economy = great.... Canceling all of your programming 2 years later and blaming the same economy = priceless.

AJCangey7, good point about the new studio.

Could we have the first white elephant of the North Shore development? Fancy new hotels and restaurants, alongside a Fox Sports Pittsburgh studio with a great view of the city that won't be used.

It was literally our window to Pittsburgh for those of us no longer living there.

I tried calling the number Stan gave on Thursday's show to complain. Their graphics are horrible. I can't tell between a 6 and an 8, but looking at their Web site, it appears to be 412-316-3856 or 3858.

Anyway, I tried both and both had a recording saying that this was a non-working number at Fox.

The e-mail address Stan gave was feedback@libertysportsgroup.com

How's this for a lineup of all Pirate or former Pirates all of which were already under realistic contracts that would fit within a Pirate Budget by simply expanding the payroll by a reasonable amount.

1. A. McCutchen - CF

2. F. Sanchez - 2B

3. N. McClouth - LF

4 A. Ramirez - 3B

5. J. Bay - RF

6. R. Doumit - C

7. A. LaRoche - 1B

8. J. Wilson - SS

9. Pitcher of choice

I believe this lineup could consistently compete with anyone. Combine it with this years pitching and we would be at the top of the division. And we could still focus on rebuilding in the minors. Plus boost attendance and show a sincere commitment to winning. All with pieces we already had from our own system or previous "rebuilding" trades.
