Blair takes a step back with Spurs

By Bob Smizik | Thursday, 5:30 p.m.

The disappointment that came with DeJuan Blair falling to the second round of the NBA draft last month was tempered by the fact he was taken by San Antonio, a championship-caliber team where there appeared to be ample opportunity for him to play and possibly start.

Not any more.

The Spurs still may turn out to be a good place for Blair, but when they agreed to contract terms yesterday with veteran center-forward Antonio McDyess, Blair’s potential minutes took a major hit.

McDyess, 6-9, 245 pounds, will team with Tim Duncan as the starting inside tandem for the Spurs. McDyess, 33, has a career average of 13.2 points and 7.8 rebounds. He averaged 9.6 points and 9.8 rebounds last season. He was the second overall pick in the 1995 draft.

In adding inside depth, the Spurs didn’t stop with McDyess.

They also signed Marcus Haislip, 6-10, the 13th pick in the first round in the 2002 draft, who has been playing in Spain after three disappointing seasons in the NBA.

The Spurs are still greatly pleased to have secured Blair in the second round, but they clearly never anticipated him being a starter. Blair still has the opportunity for a good NBA career, but with McDyess on board he will have to earn his minutes.

LOT more games/minutes in NBA Bob...Blair will get his share...McDyess good acquistion & excellent mentor for Blair...his rebounding will be there....he needs a bit more offense around the basket and some luck with his knees.

Clearlly you don't know the NBA game well Bob.  Very rarely do undersized big men start in the first year of their career.  The Spurs signing of McDyess is actually a good thing for Blair.  It's another mentor with his head on straight to help show Blair the ropes.  Not sure if you were aware, but McDyess has been around a while and is likely very close to retirement, so his signing will have no long-term impact on Blair in San Antonio.

I see Blair playing 10-15 minutes a game this year while he learns from one of the greatest power forwards of all time.  If you actually believed that Blair had a chance to start this year, then you haven't watched much NBA basketball recently.

(My only opinion was that Blair minutes would diminish with the addition of McDyess. I did not suggest he would be a starter. Others had. -- Bob Smizik)

yeah, I would think this is a short-term insurance policy/buffer by the Spurs to work Blair in slowly as he adjusts to the NBA game. The Spurs are obviously a smart, well-run organization and don't want to make a potential championship run with an undersized, unproven player being forced into that big of a role immediately.

Bob, your post said that there appeared to be ample opportunity for Blair to start this year.  How is that someone else saying it?  That was you Bob!  Be a man and admit when you're wrong for once.

(I scanned the two posts I've written about Blair since the draft. I cannot come across anything where I said he would be a starter.  Please cite the example. If I'm wrong, I'll be glad to address it.  -- Bob Smizik)

If you see Blair playing 10-15 minutes a game then you need glasses!

Blair will never be a starter in the NBA!  He's too small (6'7" when he stands on his toes) to play power forward and center and he can't shoot good enough to play small forward (Lebron James is a small forward and he's 6'9").  How is going to be a starter if he doesn't have a position to play?  The only way he can stick around is if he can rebound, but I just can't see him dominating the boards in the NBA like he did in college.  Good luck Blair, you're going to need it!
