The disappointment that came with DeJuan Blair falling to the second round of the NBA draft last month was tempered by the fact he was taken by San Antonio, a championship-caliber team where there appeared to be ample opportunity for him to play and possibly start.
Not any more.
The Spurs still may turn out to be a good place for Blair, but when they agreed to contract terms yesterday with veteran center-forward Antonio McDyess, Blair’s potential minutes took a major hit.
McDyess, 6-9, 245 pounds, will team with Tim Duncan as the starting inside tandem for the Spurs. McDyess, 33, has a career average of 13.2 points and 7.8 rebounds. He averaged 9.6 points and 9.8 rebounds last season. He was the second overall pick in the 1995 draft.
In adding inside depth, the Spurs didn’t stop with McDyess.
They also signed Marcus Haislip, 6-10, the 13th pick in the first round in the 2002 draft, who has been playing in Spain after three disappointing seasons in the NBA.
The Spurs are still greatly pleased to have secured Blair in the second round, but they clearly never anticipated him being a starter. Blair still has the opportunity for a good NBA career, but with McDyess on board he will have to earn his minutes.
