A weekend full of blues coming up, but today is 09.09.09

There seems to be lots of blues (and some almost-blues) coming this way for the weekend.

But first, take note that today is 09.09.09. It will be the last of these repeating, single-digit dates until Jan. 1, 2101. What does it mean? There are lots of things going on, including big Beatles news (no, not a reunion!). And even this kind of stuff. What does that have to do with the blues? Probably zip, but it was fun looking it all up. BlueNotes had to have something to do over a long Labor Day weekend while relaxing at his West Virginia Blues Fortress of Solitude.

Now back to the blues.

Here's what's coming up for the next few days:

Let's start with Friday night, which will give some of us fits trying to pick a show to attend.

At Moondog's you can experience the power of Curtis Salgado's fine soul music -- soaring vocals and sizzling harp. He was my favorite moment at the Pittsburgh Blues Festival.

Meanwhile, way across town at the Palisades Ballroom in McKeesport, Burgh soulman Billy Price hooks up with the always-tough Nighthawks for a show in which both bands plan to set up together, and alternate songs throughout the night. Sounds like spontaneous blues combustion could occur. And a lot of fun.

BlueNotes had long ago made a commitment to attend the Palisades with some friends (yes, he has a few), so we'll have to rely on comments from Bluzer, who sounded like he was going to make the Salgado show his goal for the weekend, to hear about that show.

On Saturday night, Boz Scaggs shows up at the Carnegie Music Hall in Homestead. Now I know he's not exactly a bluesman, but over the years his work seems to have been graced by the soul of the blues.

Even on Monday night, there are even some blues to check out, as Australian-based acoustic bluesman Geoff Achison comes to the Thunderbird Cafe. He's got a great rep as an acoustic player.

Also this weekend, starting tomorrow night, is the Carnegie Arts & Heritage Festival, with a lot of emphasis on local blues bands. They have many other events and music as well -- check it out here. But here's the blues schedule:

Thursday, September 10
5:00-6:30 p.m.  Sweaty Betty
6:30-8:00 p.m.  Dave Iglar
Halftime  -    EMJ Band

9:00-10:30 p.m.  Bill Toms

10:30-12:00 p.m. Jill West and Blues Attack
Saturday, September 12
Noon – 4:00 p.m. Battle of the Bands
4:30-6:00 p.m. The Elliots
6:00-7:30 p.m.  Trainwreck
7:30-9:00 p.m. Gary Belloma
9:00-10:30 p.m. Mansfield 5
10:30-12:00 p.m. Joe Grushecky

Go forth and enjoy.

The Palisades hosted many great acts in the 60's and seventies, but once they got it fixed up in the nineties, it was mostly the sansabelt crowd doing doo-wop shows, along with the square dancers and big-banders.

I attended lots of banquets and charity functions there, but it's only recently that Bonedog's been bringing in blues and R&B acts. These are always great shows.

Like I said before, big tables, lots of room, cheap drinks and a conservatively driven sound board.  What's not to like?

drinks and appetizers at Woody's beforehand

see you there................

and believe me, having already seen B.P. umpteen times, I'd be at Moondogs if it wasn't a Palsades show.  Bluzer gave me th low down skinny on Curtis and I'm eager to catch him.

Here's a couple of upcoming gigs Bluenotes failed to mention:

>The Steelers play their first game on Thursday night....can you think of a better cure for the 'Bucco Blues'? (17 losing seasons...at least the Pirates surpassed SOME kind of record albeit one not really worth celebrating).

>Something called 'The Steel City Big Pour' is happening at Construction Junction on Saturday. A band called Hoodoo Drugstore (with special guest Jimmy Adler) is the entertainment but the event is already sold out. Hoodoo Drugstore is a great band...keep an eye out for them in the future.

>AND, Snoop Dogg is at Mr Small's. Snoop is the 'Schizzle' as the kids say!! (Sometimes BLUZER just can't help himself!! This was one of those times.).

On a somewhat more serious note, let me take a moment and backtrack a bit to comment on the Blues and Blues-related events of the weekend just passed:

It was terrible. Absolutely nothing (or at least very little) of interest to the average Blues fan was going on. The clubs were devoid of any national Blues acts. The normally reliable 'Austin City Limits' had the frickin' Foo Fighters. WYEP pre-empted the Saturday Blues programming so they could run down their yearly 'Greatest hits'. The only small saving grace was a film on TV called 'The Commitments" about the trials and tribulations of a fictitious Irish Soul band. The soundtrack was FANTASTIC!! Part of the plot of the movie revolved around Wilson Pickett but he didn't even actually show up. This was not a new film but it's one I would recommend. All in all the whole weekend was pretty much a bust.

I realize that every weekend can't always be jam-packed with an abundance of choices for the discriminating Blues fan. So I'm indeed looking forward to hanging out somewhere this coming weekend where the music's hot...before the weather starts to turn freezing cold. Decisions, decisions.

There's one more thing that I became aware of this past weekend on which I'd like to comment...Kate Borger is no longer hosting the 'Roots And Rhythm Mix' Sundays on WYEP. I'll give this new person that's been hired from North Carolina a chance but I'll miss Kate. She showed up at alot of the same gigs I attended over the last couple of years and I hope she continues to support roots music. Fame is fleeting and the music business can be fickle but perhaps Ms. Borger will find some comfort in knowing that her efforts were appreciated. Many Thanks to Kate from BLUZER and best of luck.

Oh, and I guess there will also be alot of Beatles music in the air this weekend. (Don't blame me...Bluenotes mentioned it). How many different ways can the music companies think of to sell us the same music over and over? Evidently, they came up with one more. It goes without saying that these aren't your Grandfather's (or your Uncle BLUZER's) scratchy, old Beatles records!! I have enough Beatles music...what I want is a comprehensive Tampa Red Boxset!!

Billy Price and The Nighthawks about 15 minutes from my front door, life is good.  The last time I saw either perform was a Christmas show at Moondog's a coupla/three years back.  There's nuthin' else quite like Mark Wenner workin' that harp, you just gotta move.  Should be a great time.  Hope to see Bluenotes hisself there.
