See you later, Porkulator

The Bossman, the Daddio of the Raddio, Pork the Tork, is leaving Pittsburgh for Florida. Finally, some good music to go with all that dreary sunshine and orange juice.

Porky Chedwick memories are welcome here. If it wasn't for the Bossman, many of us would have had to suffer through our angst-ridden childhoods without real music. One can only guess at the miserable lives we'd be leading if not for all that doo-wopping and shh-bopping. Or something.

Enjoy it, Porky, and later, indeed.

Jim - You had to know I'd be one of the first to post for Porky.

At a car cruise on the July 4th weekend, no less than 20 people came up to me to ask if I heard the news:  Porky was moving away from Pittsburgh!  I mean, these guys were standing there in shock!  It was as if the music died for those folks, and I felt like someone had punched me in the stomach.  We knew that Porky and his legendary career at 90 years young is amazing, but  some of us thought it would never end.  He introduced so many of us to those great R & B sounds.

I grew up listening to Porky.  I’m told that I danced my first dance at the age of about 3 or 4 while listening to Porky spin a Bo Diddly tune.  Traveling the twisted road in a sort of radio career, it was to take me 40 years to finally meet him.  And then Porky was gracious, telling me he was honored to finally meet me after hearing my voice on the air for years.  I have the pleasure of keeping the sounds Porky introduced to us alive, along with a handful of other die-hard Pittsburgh Oldies DJ’s.  Someone years ago dubbed me “The Diva of DooWop”, but Porky himself once told me “If I’m the ‘Big Boss Man’, you’re the ‘Little Boss Lady’ of the radio.”  That was an honor I will never forget.

Porky – I’ll gladly step aside and hand over the mic anytime you want to hit the airwaves.  Good luck in Florida…we’ll miss you.
