NFL Draft : A closer look at the Steelers' selections so far

The PG's Ed Bouchette offers a closer look at the Steelers' NFL Draft picks through Round 7 today:

ROUND 7 (241) – David “D.J.” Johnson, TE, 6-2, 270, Arkansas State – H-back in the mold of Sean McHugh of the Steelers, playing either fullback or tight end . . . Averaged 16.2 yards per catch last season on 22 receptions . . . Started the past three seasons . . . Native of Pine Bluff, Ark.

ROUND 7 (226) – A.Q. Shipley, C, 6-1, 302, Penn State – Maniacal worker who overcame some physical shortcomings to become a pro prospect . . . Has shorter arms than pros would prefer for pass blocking and he’s not as versatile as some of the centers drafted a day earlier . . . Moon native who grew up a fervent Steelers fan . . . Dominated against excellent USC defense in the Rose Bowl . . . Although drafted late, he’ll get a chance to stick with the Steelers because of their lack of centers.

ROUND 6 (205) – Ra’Shon “Sonny” Harris, DL, 6-4, 303, Oregon  -- Strong, inconsistent one-year starter . . . Played tackle for the Ducks but could play end or tackle with the Steelers . . . Started all 13 games last season but finished only as his team’s 10th-leading tackler . . . Redshirted and stayed five seasons at Oregon . . . From Pittsburg, Cal.

ROUND 5 (169)Frank Summers, 5-9 ½, 242, Nevada-Las Vegas – Could become the short-yardage back they’ve looked for since Jerome Bettis retired . . . Summers is not a candidate to ever become a starter but can run low and get the tough yards, and he might be able to play some fullback . . . One of 30 prospects to visit the Steelers . . . California native who played in junior college before his two seasons at UNLV . . . Can catch a little as well . . . Runs 4.63.

ROUND 5 (168)Joe Burnett, WR/KR, 5-9 ½, 194, Central Florida – Small but stocky with so-so speed. Burnett has good return ability on both punts and kickoffs with five run back for touchdowns in his career . . . Steelers secondary coach called him a “playmaker” and that he will get a chance to become one with them . . . Has good closing speed . . . Starter all four seasons and was first team all-Conference USA.

ROUND 3 (96 overall) -- Keenan Lewis, CB, 6-1, 205, Oregon State – High school teammate in New Orleans and best friends with Wallace, their previous pick in the third round . . . Steelers secondary coach Ray Horton compared him to Ike Taylor in style and physique – and also in not coming down with interceptions . . . Lewis gives them the kind of size they love at the position, so he can help on  the run and also hold receivers up at the line . . . Academic All-Pac 10 . . . Four-year starter, he helped beat Pitt in Sun Bowl, 3-0, with an interception, a pass breakup and four tackles.

ROUND 3 (84)Mike Wallace, WR/KR, 6-0, 195, Mississippi – Has 4.3 speed and averaged over 20 yards a catch last season. He’ll get a chance to compete with Limas Sweed for playing time and also becomes their top threat as a kick returner, something they’ve long needed . . . Needs to refine his route running but he can help immediately by going deep . . . Originally signed with Oregon State with high school teammate Keenan Lewis, then decided not to go and sat out the 2004 season . . . Three-year starter at Ol’ Miss.

ROUND 3 (79)G Kraig Urbik, G, 6-5 ½, 330, Wisconsin – Versatile lineman, the Steelers will even try to see if he can play center . . . He started 50 games in college, 34 at guard and 16 at tackle. He will get a chance to compete at right guard with Darnell Stapleton . . . All-Big Ten first team . . . Missed two mid-season games with sprained left MCL in his knee vs. Penn State, but finished by playing in final five games   . . . Wisconsin coaches say he was the toughest player on their team.

ROUND 1 (32)Evander “Ziggy” Hood, DE, 6-2 ½, 300, Missouri – First defensive end drafted on the first round by the Steelers since Aaron Jones in 1988 and first defensive lineman drafted in the top three rounds since Casey Hampton in 2001 . . . Played tackle in 4-3 defense but will play end with the Steelers . . . His Mexican grandmother, who had trouble speaking English, gave him his nickname . . . Ran a 4.88 at the combine . . . Started all 28 games the past two seasons . . . Had 1 ½ sacks and six tackles in Missouri’s Cotton Bowl victory against Arkansas . . . Played as a true freshman and started the past three seasons . . . All-Big 12 performer and second-team academic all-conference.

I have to say that I like what the Steelers have done thus far.  With the first two picks, we did what we needed to do in last years draft and added depth to the OL and DL.  As far as production goes, last year's rookie class was abysmal with the Steelers ROY being an undrafted guy who helped on special teams.  Hood will definitely got on the field rotating with the other members of the DL, and I think that Urbick will be a starter in another season or two.  We really needed a KR and Wallace should come in and compete for that job with RB Stefan Logan (signed from the CFL in Feb).  Lewis along with Kiewan Ratliff will also provide depth at DB and should also help on special teams.

We're about 1/3 of the way through the 5th round and Scott McKillop is still available. I admit to being a Pitt homer, but I'd like to see the Steelers take a flier on him if he's there when they have their back to back picks at the end of the 5th round. I think he could be special teams monster while he gains experience, and perhaps could help us a couple years down the road when Farrior, Foote, etc. will be leaving/retiring.

Darn...spoke too soon! 2 picks after I posted, the SF 49'ers take McKillop with the 10th pick in the 5th round.

I actually think that the pick of Joe Burnett in the 5th round could be an interesting one.  He was one of the top KR/PR men in college football last season.  I like that we've addressed the need for a good return man, and it should be a good competition in camp.  It'll be nice to have someone dangerous returning kickoffs as opposed to guys like Davenport, Russell, and Moore.

Talk about dangerous returner, seven hells. Wallace looks like he's made of solid muscle, and holy cats is he fast.

I still think Russell has potential, though. I wish he'd let the psych of the game go and do what he can do. He's fast, thinks on his feet, etc. And I like best that he seems to see the route. But he lets himself turn to lead sometimes. Maybe a little competition will help.

Steelers just got their center, A.Q. Shipley from Penn State. I'm not a college fan, so I don't know anything about him, so I'm eager to hear some input to know if this is a guy the Steelers liked, wanted, were thrilled to see still available, etc. Will he really be given a serious chance to start? Or is he a project? Any comments from fellow posters that know anything about him is appreciated. ;-)

AQ shipley was a waste of a pick, he won't even make the practice squad, he's small barely 6'1", 300 lbs, short arms, wasted pick, he's not the center of the future, it will have to be next years 1st or 2nd round pick to getting a Center...other then that pick, i like the rest of the draft, can't wait to see who they sidn as undrafted FA's

MikeinNC09 wrote re: NFL Draft : A closer look at the Steelers' selections so far

Shipley was a waste of a pick????  What???  He was a 7th round selection??  How many 7th rounders make the team anyway? Its not like Dermonti Dawson was sitting there at pick #227.

Shipley won the Remington award for the nations best center.  He won the Big Ten Offensive Linemen of the year.  He was a 3 year (I think) starter.  The guy is a football player.  I'll say he makes the team, and is starting for them at Center in 2010.  (Hartwig's contract is up after this year)

Name the last time the Steelers used a #1 pick for a Center anyway?  Dawson was a 2nd round Pick, (at guard) Webster 4th, I think.  Hartings was a 4th rounder picked by Detroit.   I would have like to have Wood or Mack, but I have no problem using a 7th round pick on Shipley..(who is from Pgh, btw)

He is a football player he gets the job done who cares about how small he is.

I think he won the award for the best center in college football too.

He also had one of the best Wonderlic scores at the combine he was in the top 1%.

Great pick for the steelers

I guess the Steelers could have drafted a center in the first round, even though Mack and Unger were taken.  After, its the round you were taken, not how you turn out.  That's why James Harrison was a wasted roster spot

A Q Shipley was a STEAL !! He will play, make all pro and be in the league for 10 years. I can tell you mark it down. He's smart, high football I.Q. and at the end of the day he bleeds black and gold before he was drafted. He will be the pick to rememebr from this draft. Mark it down

Love AQ, must be an armPITT fan, Harrrison a wasted spot what on earth are u talking about?

AZSteelerFan88 wrote re: NFL Draft : A closer look at the Steelers' selections so far

MikeinNC09 and Sillo have it right. There was another guy with a similar build who dominated the NFL for years, Mark Stepnowski of the Cowboys. We were neighbors, so I can tell you the guy was small. I had at least 2 inches on him, and I'm 5'10". He was only a 5-time Pro Bowler and 2 time Super Bowl winner!

I'm also looking forward to seeing the undrafted free agent signings. There are a ton of OL/DL coming out of top programs, and not all of them were drafted. Steelers are looking pretty good.

Leave it to me to stir it up. & NO i'm not an armPITT fan, Steelers, Pens, buccos, yes, well, i hope he proves me wrong, & he is the center for yrs, cheaply, but I have my doubts,

Lets just Shipley do his thing. Mike Mayock on NFL network says Shipley will start in the NFL in 2 yrs.  Sorry about the arm PITT thing

I like the picks, as far as the positions that were taken, But question some of the choices with other players on the board. Mainly Ziggy Hood, with Ron Brace still available. Obviously the Steelers had Ziggy rated higher, but in my mind Brace better fits the Steelers prototype Defensive Lineman, larger man who could occupy blockers and let our Linebackers run free...

The place where the short arms would hurt AQ Shipley will be in pass blocking.  That would be a real problem in Philly, where they pass about 65% of the time.  But since Pitt is a running team, it won't be a problem.  Unless Mack had been available at #32, Shipley was the best choice for Pitt.

Overall, I like the draft class.  They got two DL who could play both NT and DE.  They got two WR who can also be return men.  They got a RB who loves running people over.  The only pick I'm not too sure about is DJ Johnson, but that's partly because I know nothing about him.  Let's see how the class ends up five years from now.

Just a couple of minor corrections:

1. Jeff Hartings was a 1st round pick of the Detroit Lions.

2. Sorry, but no way was Stepnoski just 5'8".

Summers is a load. Just ask the Arizona State defense which ranked No. 2 (think) in the Pac 10. He effectively ended their season in September, accounting for over 100 yds. in the 2nd half. On a 30 yd. gain on a swing pass, he took out half the team, dragging people out of bounds, and still never hit the ground. Nobody wanted to tackle the guy.

Correction noted...but he player guard for the Lions.

Hope they sign CJ Davis from Pitt as a free agent.  :)

Stepnoski was 6'2' and 265 while playing for Dallas. But most defenses played in a 4-3 back then and centers didn't have to face 330+ pound NT's with the 3-4 being the norm around the NFL.

As for the draft I thought the Steelers did as well as could be expected drafting last. I like the first 6 picks as they addressed needs. The others would be a bonus if they can contribute. The last guy was picked because Spaeth can't block at all.

Nice job on the draft this year.

I also think Shipley was a steal.  The guy has smarts.  You could come up with a powerhouse team of guys taken in the late rounds and a team of losers consisting of many past first rounders.  Time will answer all the questions.
