Steelers-Colts live blog

2:45 p.m.: Hi everyone from Heinz Field about 90 minutes before the Steelers take on the Colts. It's the start of an important three-game stretch for the Steelers over the next 11 days. They will play three AFC games all at home during that stretch. They host San Diego next Sunday and then play the Bengals on Thursday, Nov. 20. The Colts (4-4) are coming off a nice win at home over New England and their offense seems a bit more in sync with the return of Dallas Clark to the lineup. He's always been one of Peyton Manning's favorite targets and should be today, too. This game sets up to be a fairly close contest, but an important one for both teams as they begin the second half of the season. I'll be  back shortly with inactives and more pregame comments.

Remember, we need your posts to keep the dialog going!

2:53 p.m.: The inactives are out for today's game. Steelers: CB Bryant McFadden, RB Willie Parker, LB LaMarr Woodley, OL Tony Hills, OT Marvel Smith, TE Heath Miller, DE Orpheus Roye and QB Dennis Dixon (3rd QB). For the Colts: DB Kelvin Haden, DB Jamie Silva, LB Jordan Senn, LB Buster Davis, C Steve Justice, WR Roy Hall, TE Tom Santi and DT Daniel Muir. Lawrence Timmons will start at OLB for Woodley and Max Starks will continue at LT for Smith. Matt Spaeth will start at TE for Miller. We'll see how this affects different coverage packages for the Steelers. Larry Foote could be on the field more in nickle situations and we may see a Bruce Davis siting. Maybe.

3:30 p.m.: The Steelers are out on the field warming up and while you can't tell much from that, Ben Roethlisberger is ou there doing some stretching and just a bit of throwing on the side. I'm sure the Steelers would love to control the line of scrimmage today and run the ball, allowing Roethlisberger a chance to throw just when necessary. He's certainly capable of winning a game on his own, but you still wonder just how healthy he is. We know this: he's healthy enough to play and to start, which is all that matters at the moment. \

NFL Films is here and there are a couple of guys with a camera and mic watching James Harrison warm up. That should make for some interesting footage once they compile the Steelers 2008 season video. Or show it on NFL Network. It's amazing how that idea, begun in the late 1950s by Ed Sabol and run for years now by his son, Steve, has blossomed into a tremendously profitable part of the NFL's empire. Not to mention the countless years of joy they've brought to football fans everywhere. From great video to symphony music to accompany it, NFL Films has been a big part of the NFL's success.

4:05 p.m.: Just about ready to go here and the Steelers are about to be introduced. Little bit of wind here, blowing across the field left to right as you face the open end of the field. We'll see if that presents any issues for the kickers today. The Steelers defense is being introduced, we should be ready to go in about 10 minutes.

4:17 p.m.: Losing Najeh Davenport doesn't improve the kick return game, but 15-yard penalty by the Colts makes things a bit better. A short, crisp passing game to start could get Ben into a nice rhythm. Three plays and a first down. So far, a good start. Look to see if the Steelers throw a lot of short, quick stuff then try to pull them up and hit a deep one.

4:22 p.m.: Looks like the Steelers are trying short passes and quick drops for Roethlisberger. It's about time. One thing you'll see a lot of today are runs between the tackles by the Steelers. The Colts do not have a defensive starter who weighs more than 274 pounds. One of the pleasures I get when I cover games is I sit next to our Gene Collier in the press box. Gene's sharp eye caught that stat. If you get a chance today, check out Gene's A-1 story on why Dan Rooney chose to support Barrack Obama in the recent presidential race. Very insightful stuff.

There's the first score of the game and the Steelers made it look very easy. Moore from a yard out. First quarter with 9:07 left, Steelers 7, Colts 0.

4:35 p.m.: That's vintage Colts, isn't it? Peyton Manning in 1:26 evens the score. Taylor is beaten on this play, but makes a nice recovery. But he has no hands and thus, Reggie Wayne is able to catch the ball, one miss later by Ryan Clark and it's a tie game. The more Manning plays, the healthier he seems. And that means the Steelers have to keep hammering the ball on offense. Ball control is the name of the game for the Steelers today. First quarter with 7:41 left, Steelers 7, Colts 7.

4:40 p.m.: That was ugly. It was also the Colts first sack in a month. Let the debate begin right here: did Big Ben hold it too long or did the O-line get beaten badly? You never want three-and-outs on offense, but when you have to keep a very good offense off the field, you really don't want them at all. Defense needs to make a stop.

4:50 p.m.: Is there any doubt who is a Pro Bowl player on the Steelers defense? Aaron Smith has just dominated today and his sack made the defensive series. He's long been their most consistent lineman and he continues to be the real anchor of the defense. Not saying Casey Hampton doesn't make plays, too, but Smith never comes off the field it seems. That gives Smith 40.5 sacks for his career, which puts him in 8th place all time on the Steelers list. He just passed the late Ernie Holmes.

4:55 p.m.: End first quarter, Steelers 7, Colts 7. Not a bad first quarter considering the Colts lit them up with that long TD pass to Reggie Wayne. The Steelers need to keep grinding it out and keeping the Colts offense off the field. Ben look OK, but has been a bit behind his receivers today, especially as they go longer down the field. But they'll adjust. The short drops and quick passes are probably the rule of the day. They start quarter two with a third-and-long. We'll see what the call is.

4:59 p.m.: Some trickery doesn't backfire on the Steelers because Ben has a great set of hands on him. Hey Mewelde, an easy pitch to the QB is the essential part of the flea flicker play. Ben threw that pretty much flat-footed 38 yards to Hines Ward and only a huge hit by Bob Sanders keeps him out of the end zone. Good call by offensive coordinator Bruce Arians not to sneak it in from the 1. It's what they pay RBs to do in the NFL. Second quarter with 13:21 left, Steelers 14, Colts 7.

5:06 p.m.: OK, what's the over-under on the amount of the fine Ryan Clark is going to get for that hit on Dallas Clark. No penalty. Shoulder to shoulder, but you could argue Dallas Clark was helpless on that play. The league probably will do just that, but we'll see. Looked like a clean hard hit to me, but I'm not Gene Washington. And I promise before this day is done, I'm going to find out why the devil Ike Taylor does that hand in front of the face thing. He's done it for a couple years. I'm making a mental note to ask about it. Let's see if they can follow that defensive stand with another nice drive. Got a chance to bury the Colts a bit here.

5:11 p.m.: Bob Sanders is just a monster. He's so much like Polamalu it's scary. And he's probably now the best player on the Colts defense now that Dwight Freeney isn't what he was a couple years ago. He makes a fine play on the Moore run on second down because the Steelers had opened a huge hole for him. Sanders fires in and gets ahold of a leg and doesn't let go. Terrific player to watch. And he's probably stoked by his alma mater's big win yesterday over the Nittany Lions. By the way, the Nits are now No. 8 in the latest BCS poll. Pitt is No. 21.

5:24 p.m.: Jeff Reed is money once again. Looks like Ward kept running up when Ben might have been wanting him to break to the post a bit. Probably cost them a shot at the TD, but you'll take what you can get in a game like this. You just have to keep scoring against a team like the Colts, because they can score quickly as we've already seen. So far a solid game for the Steelers. With 4:17 left in the second quarter, Steelers 17, Colts 7.

5:30 p.m.: The Steelers catch a huge break on the Harrison drop. Not a well-thrown ball, but it's one Harrison needed to catch. If he does, it's 7 points. Deshea Townsend got completely turned around on that play. Colts look good on this drive and if they can get some points, they'll be pretty pleased being down by a TD or less in this game.

5:35 p.m.: Nice little bullet dodge there by the Steelers. Would have been more sweet had Polamalu picked off that pass, but you'll take the punt and getting out of there with no score. Press box note: Everyone here is having a great time everytime Colts rookie WR Pierre Garcon's name is called. It's pronounced like the French word for "waiter" (gar-sohn) and every time it's mentioned folks chime in like they are calling over a French waiter. Small pleasures like that keep us occupied between plays. Honest.

Ugh. Terrible pass by Roethlisberger, thus giving the Colts a shot at redemption. Yet another underthrown ball. Hmmm.

5:45 p.m.: Peyton Manning sure is happy to have Dallas Clark back. The Steelers couldn't have asked for a worse ending to the half than what just transpired. It gives the Colts a chance to get back into the game in a big way and makes this pretty much an even game after 30 minutes. If the Steelers are thinking Townsend on Clark is a good matchup, they might want to reconsider. Clark is a big target and you almost have to double him especially close to the goal line.

Not a bad half for the home squad, but it could have been much better don't you think? Halftime: Steelers 17, Colts 14.

6:02 p.m.: Some halftime stats to chew on: Manning, 9 of 23 for 140 yards, 2 TDs and a passer rating of 89.0. Roethlisberger, 13 of 19 for 160 yards, 0 TDs and 1 really bad pick and a passer rating of 72.3. Steelers had 29 yards rushing on 16 attempts. The Colts 41 yards on 10 attempts. Hines Ward leads the Steelers in receptions with four for 71 yards. Time to start the second half.

6:11 p.m.: He'll be in the Hall of Fame one day, but there's no doubt Marvin Harrison has lost a lot of what he had. Huge break on the dropped TD. He short-armed that ball and wasn't touched by Ty Carter, who flew over the top of him. I guess he's still dangerous, but I'd put my money on Manning looking for Dallas Clark, Reggie Wayne or Anthony Gonzalez before Harrison. And it's not been a good day for Deshea. The Steelers are lucky to hold the Colts to 3. With 8:14 left in the third quarter, Steelers 17, Colts 17.

6:12 p.m.: Anyone see that blade of grass that just stopped Gary Russell from returning a kick for a TD? You hate to see that happen when you know the Colts offense isn't going anywhere. A special teams score would have been huge.

6:15 p.m.: Not a stirring offensive series by the Steelers, who can't run on a defense that hasn't stopped the run all year. I think if they have to rely on Roethlisberger solely to move the ball on offense, it could be trouble. Just announced that Marvin Harrison is out for the rest of today with a concussion. He must've caught a knee from Carter, but I didn't see that on the replay. But even a glancing blow can cause a concussion if it lands just right. The Steelers need a turnover. We'll see what happens.

6:23 p.m.: My error on Marvin Harrison. He was questionable, not out, and obviously back in the game. Huge catch from Reggie Wayne on a play they should have been off the field, the Colts get 16 and a first down. This game as a weird feeling to it.

6:28 p.m.: Wow, huge play by Ty Carter, popping Anthony Gonzalez and forcing the ball loose. That was a big series for the defense because of the play Wayne makes on that tipped ball. That's demoralizing to a defense, but give the Steelers credit, they were tough when they needed to be. I think it's important that at some point the Steelers establish the run. The Colts are not a big defense and the Steelers need to get into that balanced attack again. Big drive here because it's late in the third quarter. Nice return by Santonio Holmes. Gets the Steelers out of a hole.

6:33 p.m. Update on Townsend's injury, it's a hamstring problem and his return is doubtful. During the TV break, Mike Tomlin was really giving head linesman Derick Bowers an earful. I mean for a full minute, too. OK, this is where you win games, the fourth quarter. End of the third quarter, Steelers 17, Colts 17.

6:38 p.m.: This looks more like the first drive, short drops and shortish passes. Great catch by Ward on the third-and-two play for 17 yards. He now has 100 yards receiving and he is second on the all-time Steelers list with 17 100-yard games, behind John Stallworth. This drive is looking great. Let's see if they can top it off.

6:45 p.m.: Rookie Eric Foster's tremendous lick on Mewelde Moore kept this a very viable game for the Colts. He made two good plays, actually, submarining to stop Moore on the second-down play. The Steelers were moving so well and to settle for the FG is almost a loss for them. The best thing they did was eat up more than eight minutes on that drive. With 7:57 left in the fourth quarter, Steelers 20, Colts 17.

6:52 p.m.: How huge was that stop? Now, the offense has to do its part, run some clock and get some points. Still plenty of time left (6:13) so going into an offensive shell isn't enough. I'm seeing comments that the Steelers defense is always asked to win games. That's true. Time for the offense now to put the dagger in the heart of the Colts.

6:57 p.m.: That was brutal. Throw was behind Holmes, but he also stopped on the pattern. Either way, the defense is now in a position to at least keep the game a tie. If the Colts score a TD, that's going to be tough to overcome. I guess watching the offense today, you wonder if they could come back down 4 points. And the Colts look like they are trying to use up as much clock as possible.

7 p.m.: Great play call that caught Polamalu napping. There's plenty of time left, but the way Ben and the offense have looked, 4 points is probably too much to over come. I know that seems odd, but the offense has three points so far in this half and shows little sign of  being able to do what they want against the Colts defense. This would  be a tough loss coming off the big win in Washington, but there's still time. With 3:04 left in the fourth quarter, Colts 24, Steelers 20.

7:01 p.m.: The Steelers have allowed more TDs today (3) then they have in the last 3 games. Thanks to Gene Collier for that stat. Nice play to get this to the 2-minute warning, but they have 56 yards to go in 2 minutes. That's dicey with this offense.

7:08 p.m.: This is slow torture. They only have one TO left and still a ways to go.

7:12 p.m.: This is a tough loss and nearly a miracle win. But now it's down to the locker room to see what Tomlin and the players think. This is one they should have won, but didn't. And turnovers killed them, especially the late INT. There will be questions about Ben and his health, I'm sure. The Steelers are 6-3 now and still in first place in the AFC North, but let's hope the Colts aren't involved in a tiebreaker with them. Final score: Colts 24, Steelers 20.

8:13 p.m.: Not a very happy locker room, particularly the area around Ben Roethlisberger's locker. Ben just sat and stared for a while into his locker, then took to the showers, then took some time to get dressed. He decided to address media at his locker. He often is brought into the media room for interviews, but decided to stay there to do them. After some time, he addressed media.

He took the blame for the loss, citing the two interceptions he threw (his third was the one in the end zone at game's end). He said he would  make "no excuses" for his play and that he "let his teammates down." He was a stand-up guy about the game but he took this one very hard. Our  Bob Smizik will concentrate his column tomorrow on Big Ben, be sure you catch it. He'll be much more in-depth about the situation than this blog will be. Bottom line is Ben's feeling pretty blue about his role in this loss.

Mike Tomlin was a bit terse after the game, but very professional. He said there's "a fine line" between winning and losing in the NFL and he gave the Colts due credit. He mentioned that the Colts are not a team that allows you to beat them deep. They play the Tampa 2-deep zone (created by now-Colts, former-Tampa coach Tony Dungy) and said the short throws are what you take against the Colts defense. Tomlin mentioned that the Colts want you to get impatient so you go deep, which plays into their hands.

I also promised you the reason why Ike Taylor waves his hand in front of his face when he makes a big play. Taylor, who had two tipped balls land in Colts' receivers hands, one for a 65-yard TD pass to Reggie Wayne, explained why he does the hand wave thing. "It's for a face off," he said. "It's just what it is. Like mano-a-mano. One on one (with a receiver)" He actually did this after answering several questions about the tipped balls. Ron Cook's column tomorrow will discuss the up-and-down day the secondary had in the loss to the Colts.

Stat corner:

Total yards: Steelers 326, Colts 290

Rushing yards: Steelers 55, Colts 62

Turnovers: Steelers 3, Colts 0

The final two stats tell the story. The Colts small, quick defense suffocated the Steelers run. They often put 8 or 9 players close to the line of scrimmage daring the Steelers to pass. And the turnovers, all courtesy of Ben Roethlisberger INTs were killers. The one late in the first half and the one in the fourth quarter both leading to Colts' TDs.

Ben's QB rating for the day was 60.0. Peyton Manning's was 95.8.

8:51 p.m.: Final thoughts. The Steelers are now tied with the Ravens atop the AFC North and are no longer unbeaten in the AFC (5-1). Next week, San Diego comes to town for what is now a huge matchup for the Steelers. The Chargers won today beating hapless Kansas City by a point, 20-19. But they only won because KC scored with seconds left and decided to go for the win with a two-point try. It failed, Chargers win (gutsy call by Chiefs coach Herm Edwards, by the way). After SD next week, the woeful Bengals come to Heinz for a Thursday night game.

If you look ahead to those two weeks, the Steelers need to win to go to 8-3. Over the same stretch, the Ravens play at the Giants next week and then host the Eagles. Both games will be very tough for them to win, so if the Steelers take care of business, the division should be fine.

Looking down the road further for the Steelers there are some tough games. Following the Bengals game, the Steelers have a long 10-day layoff before traveling to Foxboro to play the Patriots on Nov. 30, then return home the following week to host Dallas. Neither game will be an easy one, but you can bet they are pointing to Dallas as a more winnable game. Then two tough road games in a row: At Baltimore and at Tennessee. A split of those two games, particularly a win against the Ravens, should be enough for the Steelers to win the division. The Steelers end their season at home on Dec. 28 vs. Cleveland.

The Steelers are going to be dogged by questions about Roethlisberger's health. Your comments on this blog, much appreciated by the way, tell you that much. The ire seems aimed at Ben and offensive coordinator Bruce Arians for the most part. The Steelers would be much better off with a healthy Willie Parker in the backfield, backed up by Mewelde Moore. And Matt Spaeth had a nice game today (6 catches, 53 yards), but Heath Miller is a better vertical threat for the Steelers. And getting LaMarr Woodley healthy for this stretch would be great, too. Lawrence Timmons gave a good account of himself today, but Woodley's pass rushing ability would have been welcomed today.

A lot of talk among the players in the locker room after the game was about finishing games. The Steelers have made some turnovers and poor plays at the end of halves to put them in tough places in their three losses. Today's game was a prime example, where turnovers just killed them. Not scoring a TD when they were first-and-five at the Colts' 5 in the fourth quarter was the quintessential example of not finishing. Settling for a field goal when you need seven points against a very good team likely comes back to haunt you. And it did.

That's it for this week's blog. I'll be with you again next Sunday live from the Chargers game, which also is a 4:15 start. Thanks for taking the time to read and post comments.

Well, that didn't last long. Come on defense, no more giving up the big plays to Manning.

And Jerry, I did read the article about Dan Rooney and Obama. I only have one comment to make: If Virginia Baird would burn all her Steelers stuff over that, then she was NO fan. Whether you voted for Obama or not, we are all Americans. If partisan politics are more important to you than than your country or your support of the Steelers, then good riddance. We used to be able to disagree with each other over politics in this country without getting ugly or burning our bridges. I suggest Ms. Baird become a Cardinals fan.

Way to manager the game worthlessburger. So fans but ben is not the QB he use to be. Maybe to many hits to the head. If his name was Kordel you would all be calling for his head!

Despite not being able to run much today against a defense that has trouble stopping the run, the Steelers had played almost a perfect first half up to the point Ben made a terrible throw on third and 2! Will he EVER learn to throw it away?! Given our defense, you think he'd be more aware of the luxury of punting occassionally and leaving it up to your defense?! Still no screen passes called, but Ben has started to find Moore underneath which is something we've been asking for for weeks. Now, if we could only find a decent kick returner?! Colts get the ball in the second half and are right back in the game. Defense is going to have to come up big for us, AGAIN!

GEEZ this punter isn't much better then old man berger... perfect chance to pin them deep inside 10 might as well have kicked it into the end zone, what ever happened to the ppoch punt?

Great timing; hit by Tyrone Carter, causing incompletion resulting in a Colts punt and decent return by Santonio Holmes. Let's see if Ben and offense can put together a drive resulting in points?! How much did you want to throw something at the TV when Wayne catches another Taylor defection! UGH!

Why not give Gary Russell a chance with a carry, Moore isn't quck enough to break it outside like willie... Russell has alittle more speed and more power....

Ben continues to put the defense in awful situations .  As long as that trend continues they will be hit or miss, especially with their schedule.  Look at this 2 minute drill, it looks like a 5 minute drill, no clock management.

I'm sorry, but even if the Steelers pull this out, BR just continues to make dumb decisions. Why on earth throw the ball and risk an interception near the end of the half deep in your own end?  BR has singlehandedly allowed Indy to be in the game.

I don't know what Tomlin should do about him. Evidently the heart-to-heart talk didn't have much impact.

Why do you have Dallas Baker out there for the first time today?  That's ridiculous.  Their play calling never fails to disappoint but I guess that's why they keep B. Arians around.  This game is over.

WOW! Thank you Ben Roethlisberger! Whats the point of having one of the best backup quarterbacks in the league and not using him when hes clearly needed? Ben is hurt more then Tomlin's saying and should not have played this game.

Come on Arians called a good game. When are you people going to look at the right person. Ben has lost every game for us this year. He either holds on to the ball to long and then takes sacks instead of throwing the ball away like a QB that has played in the NFL for more then one year or he turns it over and gives the other team the best scoring chances. GREAT DEFENSE...how long do you have to put up with bens mistakes before we do something. They need to rest ben, he could not even throw it 40 yds at the end of the game because of his shoulder. Ben do us and the team a favor and sit the next game out make it 2 games!

Couldn't agree more w. the previous posters, especially with regards to Dallas Baker being out there and the playcalling that up until the second to last play of the game had ONLY moved the ball about 30 yards in just over THREE minutes. Couldn't believe they didn't go no huddle at the end. Despite the postings about Ben, I'd rather put the playcalling in HIS hands in the final minutes than Ariens! When were they going to take a shot to the end zone? When there was just time for a Hail Mary and the Colt's defense back?! Oh! Gee! That's what they did. Peyton Manning showed why he's a great quarterback. You had to be pea-green with envy of the throw for the go-ahead touchdown. Despite everything said, I still think we lost the game when Ariens called THREE running plays up the middle and we had to settle for three. Get seven there and we're in control of the game. Worse loss of the season in my opinion.

BR is reminding me or Kordell with his inconsistancy.  One season on, one season off.  Maybe I'm just extremely frustrated, but the O-line wasn't as pathetic as usual when it comes to protecting him.  However, BR was pathetic none-the-less.  BA has to go.

Tomlin needs to rethink Ben and his plays !! The defense has been as stoic as ever. But it does not help when it has to play against the oppositions offense and also their own OFFENSE. Ben has been all talk !! His interceptions have hurt our defense and their stat's. I bet Baltimore defense is not as afflicted by their offense. They might not score, but at least they do not hand the ball to the opposition like Ben Messed-Up-Burger does. Bottom line, our Defense ROCK's and Ben stinks. Time to get Leftwich involved. Maybe, with Leftwich we would have won the other 2 NFS East games. Let Ben get his rest and his injuries taken care of. He is currently more of a liability, than an asset !!

I have to agree with the criticisms of Arians. I just don't understand some of his play-calling. Especially when we had 1st and goal at the 5. If we had scored a TD there, we'd be playing in OT, even with Ben's two INTs. And yes, maybe he is hurt more than we're being told.

And bonespa, drop the "worthlessburger" bit. Ben is a damn fine QB. Does he try too hard to make a play and hold onto the ball a little too long and take too many sacks? Yeah. But there are about 30 other teams in the league who would LOVE to have him as their starter.

BA and Ben get the game goat!  Sit ben for a game, let him re-think what how he's hurting the team.  I used to think it was the Oline, but today proved that BR is the problem.  He had all day to throw and still hit 2 INTs, could have been 3.  Also, 3 up the gut..."they'll never see it coming this third time"...Idiot!

NYCSteelersFan wrote re: Steelers-Colts live blog

I'm amazed at the lack of support for BR. He only executes the plays that are called by the OC. I don't know how anyone can say BA called a good game. Yes, Ben made a couple of bad throws, but take away the fluke tipped ball and catch for the Colt's first touchdown and the fact we settled for 3 when we should have had 7 and we win 23-17. Our run game was almost completely shut down. Is that Ben's fault. The playcalling sucks! Doesn't take a genius to see the Colts began blitzing regularly in the second half, but did we run a screen? When's the last time we run a screen pass? Moore was originally signed to be a KR and third down back. That would mean a lot of screens and draws. Did you see the one draw play they called in the second half; Moore had one guy to get past for a good gain, but the Colt peeled off the o-line (didn't see who it was) and tackled Moore. Is that Ben's fault. I like what Leftwich did in relief, but this is a guy that was unsigned when we signed him. Ben is a SB winning QB. Some of you people need to redirect your angst to the right sore spot. And before anyone says "we Steelers fans never met an OC we didn't like" I loved Mike Mularky. He got robbed from us to become coach of the Bills. It didn't work out there, but look at what he's doing with Matt Ryan and the Falcons as their offensive coordinator.

I've been a BR apologetic this season, but he's really taken two steps back.  I'm starting to fear everytime he goes back to throw...reminds me of how one would hope pray everytime the ball left Bubby Bristers hands.  I'm sorry, but I'm extremely disappointed.  THe only reason we have a winning record is our defense.  If it's not BA, it's the O-line, or BR...at the end of the day, the offense is really hurting the outstanding play of the D.  Come on!  It's the 4-4 Colts at our house!!!

I'm so tired of watching Ben give big games away, what's Tomlin doing letting him play if he's not up to par?  This has nothing to do with the O-Line, this is and has been about Ben running around like a village idiot, holding the ball, and failing to realize when to get rid of it.

I say put Leftwich in and give him a go, this has been going on for three seasons now and we need a change.

I never thought I'd say this but Byron, Byron, Byron.

How does Bruce Arians defend not calling a run play when you are up 17-7, and dominating the game on your side of the field, and then at worse having to punt?

Surely putting the Colts on their side of the 50, and forcing them to drive to score, is more favorable then giving up an INT and completely turning the momentum of this game around.

Nothing's changed...Whisenhunt, Arians, they still make stupid decisions on 3rd and short.

"Going on for three seasons?!" BR posted career numbers last year, despite being sacked a career high number and going back three seasons takes us back to the SB?! Amazing. Would you all be calling for Batch if he weren't on IR and we hadn't signed Leftwich. I thoght Ben did some good things today; rolled out once, threw on the run, to convert a first down to Washington; found Moore out of the backfield a couple of times. If he doesn't throw the two picks, both of which were poor throws, it would have been a positive game. Before we let the o-line off the hook, the fact the Colt's d-line shutdown our running game the way it did, that's not what I would call a successful effort. As for pass protection, in the second half when the Colts started blitzing more I wouldn't say Ben had all day to throw. He stepped up in the pocket, but still got tackled. The Steelers linemen don't continue blocking; they pushed guys around Ben but then those same guys came back into the play. You've got to block your man until the play is over, not just get a good push on him. This was a game they missed FWP. moore simply isn't fast enough to get outside and turn the corner. Gotta say though that the Colts are excellent tacklers; no runs after the catch and with their play today, how did they come in 4-4?

When is Tomlin going to start putting his own stamp on this team with regards to coaches? Given the state of our defense I can see not tinkering there and letting LeBeau do his thing, but given the state of our offense? He has no loyalties to Ariens. Fire his sorry a@@!

For me this Steelers loss gives blame to many people:

1. Ben: For weeks, I have called for Byron Leftwich to start as quarterback. For one thing, when he gets sacked, at least he doesn't fumble the football! When Leftwich is in the game, the offensive line seems to respond more, giving Leftwich more time to pass. Leftwich also makes decisions quicker and releases the ball accordingly. It seems to me that Ben was rushed into action and his three picks are proof.

2. Max Starks: All I need to say, is that the late penalty he got certainly did not help the Steelers and ruined our chance to score.

3. Offensive Line: Protecting the QB is your #1 concern, don't keep holding to avoid a sack because a ref will call your holding every time. It's just as bad as the QB getting sacked. I know Marvel Smith has missed time but the rest of the o-line needs to step their game up.

4. Mewelde Moore- Indy is a horrible rush defense. This was the biggest mismatch all day, Moore (with an average of 101 yards on the ground per game) vs. Indy's rush defense which is atrocious. Sure Moore got two touchdowns, but they were short and he was a disappointment.

5. Those Covering Reggie Wayne in the 1st quarter: The Steelers put people in Wayne and Dallas Clark jerseys all week in an attempt to stop them, but a la 2005 in Indy, the first play out of the gate is a long complete touchdown pass from Peyton Manning to Reggie Wayne. What a mess.

Positives:

1. Ernster did not get injured: With Mitch Berger gone, Ernster did at least an adequate job.

2. Reed keeps on rolling: With a relatively new long snapper and a new holder, Reed still was able to make his points when they counted.

3. Russell is not injured: When the Steelers made the bone headed move to release Najeh Davenport, they left themselves down to two running backs. They are lucky that Gary Russell didn't injure himself.

Just did a quick check to see WHO the Colts had lost to...the Bears, Jags, Packers and Titans. Also saw reports saying that FWP may be done for the season; torm labrum in his shoulder. That's a huge loss if it's true. Also begins to speak to his durability. I realize injuries are part of the game, but he can't help us if he can't stay on the field. Looking ahead, let's say we lose to the Chargers and then beat the Bengals, this makes us 7-4 going into games against NE, Dallas, Baltimore and Tennessee, before the final game against the Browns. Makes today's loss loom larger than first glance?!

Rothlisberger is way over-rated  Without that stifling defense, the Steelers would be 2-7.  They have had to fight to overcome Rothlisberger's incompetence game after game.

NYC Steelers Fan: Just beat The ravens again, and you guys will win your division. I might not be so friendly if we meet you agian in the playoffs. LOL Seriously, beat The Ravens again, and you guys have a wrap on your division. THE ONLY WAY that this loss will come back to haunt you guys is if we (The Colts) run the table, finish at 12-4 and win our division. Then you would have to come to Indianapolis in a playoff game. But that is looking WAY ahead, and those are all BIG ifs. It is NOT LIKELY that this particular loss will come back to haunt you

"Way over-rated?!" Last year he was being mentioned in the same breath as Brady and Manning. First-off, forget the third/last pick on the Hail Mary. He threw two bad picks, but they were play calls that came in from the OC(Ariens). Why are we passing in those situations? Just before the half with the lead and from our own 16 on third and two?! if Leftwich is in there, he has to execute the same throws?! And don't forget the brilliant 3 runs called up the middle! Stop right there! Get 7 instead of three and it's a different ballgame. As GREAT as OUR defense is, how many times do you thin we could keep a team out of the endzone if they had 3 cracks from the one or two yard line. That was the game right there! Who didn't feel that the Colts only down 3 versus 7 there was the beginning of the end? In this league you have to score, score and score some more. Yes our defense plays great, but it's our inept offense that keeps the score close because we don't score, or turn the ball over, or go three and out!

Speaking for Steelers fans I appreciate that ColtsOriolesBullets fan, but if we don't get healthy, get MORE offesive in a GOOD way, we won't make any noise or have any hope in the playoffs, and that's what you play for. Caught some of the Ravens highlights and Flacco is playing well, due in large part because he is getting good protection and is throwing the ball downfiield, supported by a decent running game. The Steelers will have neither if FWP is done for the year. :-(

Gotta blame Ben's never die attitude & Arians terrible play calling for this one. Colts stuffed the run all night long, & to call 3 strait run plays & settle for the FG was BLEEPING BLEEP< BLEEP...The Defense played as usual but we need to create some TO's.

That was tough to take.  Arians has to go, and if Ben is too hurt to play at a high level, he needs to take a week off.

The problem on offense is the same as last year.  If you look at the tapes from the 2005 season, especially the stretch from mid-November through the AFC Championshp game, when the Steelers needed to grind some time off the clock, they'd put Bettis and Krieder in the game.  They not only could grind out some first downs that way, but the threat of them in there alllowed Rothlesberger to hit Miller and Ward to run play-action passes without having a pass-rush in his face, and run bootlegs for key 1st down pickups.  Ben excelled in this kind of offense.  The Steelers this year made the decision to play without a power running back and a solid blocking full back on the roster.  As a result, against the tougher defenses, they are unable to grind out a series of first downs by running the ball, they go into shotgun formations in 2nd and 3rd down and 2 or more, and rely on Rothlesberger to make plays ala Manning or Brady.  The problem with that stragegy is that Ben isn't Manning or Brady.  He is a solid QB who can make great plays on occasion, but he's not the type of QB that can carry an offense - at least, he hasn't grown into that type of QB yet, and I'm starting to doubt he ever will. The Steelers need to re-evaluate their strategy in the offseason.  Its frustrating to watch Tennessee and the Giants win playing traditional Steelers-style football, and watch the Steelers flub a season when they're defense is at the top of their game because they don't have the personnel to play that kind of football or the inclination to get them.  Speaking of which, it sure would have been nice to see a power RB come in on 2nd and 3rd and goal, but since there isn't one, why not run a bootleg or something on one fo those downs?  And why settle for the FG at that point in the game?  With the way the defense was playing, they better strategy sure seemed to be to take a chance on 4th down and rely on the D to get the ball back with good field position if the 4th down failed - better that than trying to hold on to a 3 point lead with no running game - and a QB who will give the ball back to Manning again on our own 30.

What a shame BR is "feeling blue". I guess he cried 102M tears after the game, too. The fact is he is losing games for his teammates by trying to play when he is obviously injured and is making worse decisions in the pocket than rookies like Flacco and Ryan. For the sake of the team, he should sit himself down until he gets his head together and perhaps a bit more healthy.

Shame on Tomlin for not giving HIS team the best chance to win by continuing to allow BR to start in his current mental and physical state.

I think that as Steelers Fans, we put some very high expectations on key players.  Especially players like Big Ben when they perform like he did in '04, '05, and '07.  It's very frustrating because you come into every game hoping to see the good Big Ben with fear of the bad Big Ben showing his ugly head.  It's the inconsistency of his play that really hurts the fans.  We love him, but we hate that part of him.  Of course I would hate to see him benched for BL!  Big Ben has so many great games under his belt that it's hard to see him play so poorly.

We have seen him play at such an incredible level and still we've heard analyst say how "Big Ben just can't win with the passing game on his shoulders".  So, we apologize for him and say how it's incredible that they don't pay him his due.  However, reality starts to set in and it's starts to really bother you when you realize that perhaps they were correct.  Big Ben can't carry the team on his shoulders like a Tom Brady or Payton Manning.  That hits you in the gut and as Fans we loose it.  We want Big Ben to succeed so badly because we are so in love with the notion that we actually have a franchise quarterback.  Even when we win, if Big Ben performed poorly, the win doesn't feel as good.

Big Ben passer rating, completion %, and TDs are all down dramatically.  His INTS are on a tear.  He's not reading the coverage very well and he's throwing into areas where there is no way they can't be intercepted.  I know that he can win some games for us, but he also looses some games for us.  He's becoming a "double agent" quarterback.  He gives you a chance to win, but he also gives the other team a chance to win.

I'm not sure that Big Ben can turn it around this year (with FWP out and poor OL play).  I hope he does…I love watching him when he plays like he did last season.  However, at this point, he seems to be getting worse as the season progresses.

I think Ben Roethlisberger should donate $10,000 for every interception thrown to a charity that provides helmets to needy children.

It could be argued that he needs better protection from the offensive line but he pretty much got it today and still made bad decisions.

I am a big advocate of being paid for performance.  So let's see some performance.  This absolutely was NOT a game we should have lost.

Under my negatives I forgot to put Bruce Arians. In a televised football game a few weeks ago, (I believe it was MNF) one of the broadcasters claimed that Bruce Arians is one of "the best offensive coordinators in all of football". Whatever that broadcaster was on, he needs to take a look at the big picture.

Back in 2005, when Ken Whisenhunt was our offensive coordinator (man that seems like ages ago), Ben was quicker getting out the football, and when he did drop back, he dropped back for a purpose.

Today, it seems as if Ben is dropping back just for the sake of dropping back, as if he wants people to think he is productive. His play calling has become seemingly predictable as the defense always seems to be right with Ben on all of the plays.

Also as a little side note, that was the luckiest flea flicker that I have ever seen in my life. Where do I begin? First of all Ben nearly doesn't even catch Mewelde Moore's return throw, nearly gets sacked, pretty much throws up the ball (to seemingly no one in particular), underthrows the ball, nearly gets picked off, Hines Ward has to back up to catch it, then runs forward after losing precious yards. If that play didn't give you a heart attack as a Steelers fan, than I don't know what will.

The last time I saw Big Ben throw this badly was when he was in the motorcycle crash. I can easily compare him with last year's Tom Brady. Ben is always on the injury report every week.

JohnnyG wrote re: Steelers-Colts live blog

Ben is a great quarterback, but he needs to get healthy.  He has been playing nearly the entire season with an injured shoulder and it's taking its toll on his passing game.  I'm sure he's telling the coaching staff he's ok to play, but he needs to know when to sit the game out and work on healing his injury.  While I'm going to the SD game next week and would love to see BR, Tomlin needs to start Byron Leftwich.  Leftwich has proven capable on more than one occasion this season.  Worse case scenario, if Leftwich isn't playing well, they can alway bring out Big Ben.  As much as I love BR, the Steelers are a TEAM.  This isn't the Ben Roethlesberger show.  Get healthy Ben and let Leftwich handle the Chargers and Bengals.  He can do it.
